Beautiful handwriting, and ink choice!

I completed my first journal when I was 14, and look forward to many more years.

u/United_Guitar7721 Sep 12 '24

omg ur handwriting is EVERYTHING.

35

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 12 '24

Wow! Thank you. I modeled it after my mother. When I was a boy, she taught me how to write.

21

u/United_Guitar7721 Sep 12 '24

idk why but this reply touched me... it sounds like u love and miss ur mom alot , she did teach u very well.. your handwriting is as neat and sweet as u ... and her ❤️

19

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 12 '24

Thank you for your words. My mom is still alive, indeed, but I do miss her when I don’t see her.

14

u/United_Guitar7721 Sep 12 '24

omg i didnt mean that she wasnt alive 🥹 i just meant u must miss her when u dont see her ofc .. i bet she misses u just as much , u r adorable ♡

17

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

lol. Ah, got it. I misunderstood. She’s doing well, especially after her double knee replacement. She’s back to walking, cooking and moving about the house as if she were a 60-year old 😉

And she still has her great sense of humor.

8

u/United_Guitar7721 Sep 13 '24

omg that makes me VERY happy to hear 🥹 . im very glad she is doing well! also the way u talk about her is truly adorabl. she must be very happy to have a son who loves her and enjoys her sense of humor as much as u do haha

9

Obsessed with your pen and penmanship. Do you have any good Journaling pens you recommend?

6

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 12 '24

My favorite one is the one in the pic: Pilot’s Metropolitan with a fine nib.

2

u/HeyItsMbali Sep 13 '24

Your handwriting 😍

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Thank you 🙏🏼

2

u/HerrisC Sep 13 '24

Your handwriting looks like cursive but not cursive 😭💀

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Wow. What a cool description. Thanks!

2

u/HerrisC Sep 13 '24

Ye! I like it a lot! Lots of love 💕

2

u/sassyandshort Sep 13 '24

You have lovely handwriting! Do you find you like the dotted paper better for journaling?

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Thank you and yes. For two reasons, dots are more subtle than lines and that feels more pleasing to me nowadays. Secondly, dots are far less intrusive than lines when I draw. I’m in artist by profession and I enjoy drawing in my journals occasionally. 😊

2

u/sassyandshort Sep 13 '24

I’ve always wanted a journal to draw in. I’m more of a 90’s magazine collage kind of girl. I have zero artistic skills.

I totally agree with you on the dots vs the lines. I just bought myself a notebook with dots and cant wait to try it out.

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

There’s an artistic value to collages for sure.

I hope that you enjoy the dots as much as I do.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '24

Penmanship envy! Your style of writing and the ink colour is a beautiful combination. Thank you for sharing

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Thank you! I appreciate you’re taking the time to share your thoughts.

2

u/inksup Sep 13 '24

I thought it was printed

I write so roughly Lying down or even sometimes driving/walking

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

It’s print with my hand 😉

2

u/Glittering_Kiwi_2004 Sep 13 '24

Is that a golden ink? 🤩

3

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

It’s on the orange side.

Ambre de Birmanie by Herbin.

3

u/Glittering_Kiwi_2004 Sep 13 '24

Ah, but it does have a golden look to it! it's really pretty, i would have bought it if it were available :>

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Perhaps you may find it online.

2

u/Garibon Sep 13 '24

I felt a therapeutic sense of calm looking at your handwriting sir. Good internet post.

1

Gorgeous handwriting. Which ink is this?

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Thank you. It’s Ambre de Birmanie by Herbin. I love this ink.

2

u/Moksh_7227 Sep 13 '24

The ink really is outstanding

2

u/YifanYes Sep 13 '24

Your handwriting is a work of art! I’d love if you could share those insights

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

I’m not a calligrapher but I’ll share my approach which I’m still refining. I aim to create the same slant on my letters especially with the ascenders and descenders. I do my best to keep letters at the same heart. My penmanship is based on my mother’s. I’m simply adjusting it with those two points in mind. Lastly, I slowed down my writing so I could focus on the angle and size of the letters.

2

u/Flat_Artichoke2729 Sep 13 '24

Omg. Your handwriting is so beautiful. And congrats!

Seeing this makes me want to put more effort into my handwriting. lol

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Thank you very much. I have always liked the act of forming letters. It’s started when I was a boy and now that I’m journaling constantly, I’ve paid more attention to it.

1

u/Flat_Artichoke2729 Sep 13 '24

Does it take you a long time to write? I just finished journaling and I noticed how slow I write if I made an effort. And my handwriting still doesn’t look super nice when I try. Haha I do know it takes practice as well.

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Crafting ones letters with the intent of writing them uniformly takes a bit of devotion. Perhaps the most important element is to slow down quite a bit. It’s very important to practice letters and words. After one can do them slowly and uniformly, then one can increase the speed, only as much as you can still keep consistency in your letters. It takes a good deal of practice, but I think most adults expect results much sooner than what it really takes. I see this in drawing. My career is art and I studied classical drawing. Now I teach private students and every adult expects results much faster than what they come by. I suspect it’s similar in handwriting.

2

u/Flat_Artichoke2729 Sep 13 '24

Thank you for the reminder to be patient. You are absolutely right!

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

You’re welcome ☺️

2

u/yoongularitae Sep 13 '24

Beautiful handwriting and a wonderful achievement! Here's to many more days ahead of journalling :)

What keeps you motivated? Do you use daily prompts? Finding things to write about shouldn't be hard but it's definitely a consistent struggle!

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Thank you!

I write about all sorts of subjects. Sometimes I write about my daily events. At the time I write emotions that may be going through me. But other subjects are interesting too. I can write about why I like a character in a novel or what makes one evil in a movie. and I find them interesting. I also include memories from my childhood. These are in abundance as I’m sure they are for everyone else. In short, there is never a shortage of subjects of which to write.

2

u/ImNotCleaningThatUp Sep 13 '24

This is so beautiful. It makes me so happy, like I’m reading a really old letter.

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Wow! Thank you! 🙏🏼

2

u/Remember-That-Time-I Sep 13 '24

OP, I love your handwriting and that colour of ink! Would you mind telling me what sort of ink and pen you're using?

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Thank you.

Pen: Pilot Metropolitan Ink: Ambre de Birmanie by Herbin

As you may know, the Metro is inexpensive but of good quality and the ink is awesome.

2

u/UmmmmmWhut Sep 13 '24

This brings me peace.

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 14 '24

Wow! Thank you. 🙏🏼

2

u/omwtomordor Sep 14 '24

omg this is pure handwriting-p*rn 🤤

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 14 '24

Haha. Thank you!

2

u/Baglogi Sep 14 '24

I see so much appreciation and support for you. You should journal about it.

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 14 '24

What a great suggestion! I will do exactly this. I had not expected such a response. I really didn’t have expectations, really. I was simply happy and thought I’d post about it.

2

u/theorangepriestess Sep 14 '24

Your handwriting is incredibly nice ! Jelly!

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 14 '24

Thank you 🙏🏼

2

u/loner_mayaya Sep 14 '24

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 14 '24

Thank you 🙏🏼

2

u/webtronaut Sep 14 '24

I’ve never seen better handwriting in my life

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 17 '24

Wow! Thank you. I had no idea that my handwriting would have such a response.

2

u/TheNunuJournals Sep 14 '24

Awesome! Lovely calligraphy 😊

1

u/RalozihcS Sep 12 '24

That handwriting... and the pen 🫠

1

u/sorakawa_94 Sep 12 '24

What pen and nib is this? 😯

3

u/digitalmayhap Sep 12 '24

Not OP but I believe it is a Pilot Metropolitan with a Fine nib

2

u/sorakawa_94 Sep 12 '24

Oohhh thank you, I wondered if it was a stub nib but it does look quite fine.

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 12 '24

Indeed! It’s the Metro with a fine nib. It’s inexpensive and quite fabulous.

1

u/No_Championship_3372 Sep 13 '24

What is the paper type?

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

It’s Fabriano Ispira. I love the hue but it ghosts too much. So, I only write on one side. My next journal is the Leuchttrum 120g. This great for fountain pens.

2

u/No_Championship_3372 Sep 13 '24

Oh I see. Thanks for the information. I love dot grid, but my stalogy’s dots are barely seen, unlike yours. Leuchttrum is a great notebook! Hope you enjoy the experience.

1

u/Rebel_Scum26 Sep 13 '24

What pen is this??

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

The Pilot Metropolitan, fine nib. It’s less than $30 US and it’s fantastic.

1

u/Emergency_Move_2566 Sep 13 '24

I find it to be such a struggle to journal daily except for in my pocket notebook as a catch all. How do you do it?

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24 edited Sep 13 '24

Good question. I always find a subject. If I don’t write about my day, I’ll write about a memory that hovered in my mind during the day or week. Perhaps, my mind has been stuck on a song and so I write about what it means to me or how or what it reminds me of. Another choice is to write about my interest in an upcoming Netflix series. I discuss why I like a certain character in a movie or book, or what makes him or her evil. Maybe the character has similarities to someone I know. Wouldn’t it be interesting and hilarious to know someone like George Costanza from Seinfeld? There would be so much to write about! I can write about a toy I got for Christmas. We were so poor that we each got one gift. I can write about that or how different it was for my sons to get multiple presents.

There are a thousand things of which to write, really. One can even write about something from Reddit that made a big impression—positive or negative. For example, yesterday there were lots of posts about 9-11. I read about a bartender in Connecticut. After 9-11, some of his regulars no longer came in. It turns out that they were at the Towers. That’s been on my mind a lot today. Now, I’m writing about it.

I bet that you also have an endless stream of memories, feelings and objects all around that could easily become entries in your journal. Three years from now, even an entry about a salt shaker will be interesting, funny, or at the least, nostalgic.

So, write away, my friend. You have lots to share in your journal.

2

u/Emergency_Move_2566 Sep 13 '24

Wow this was extremely insightful and I just want to say thank you for taking the time to answer and in such detail hope you have a great night

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

You’re more than welcomed. Happy journaling and good night to you.

1

u/Sad_Chard_5023 Sep 13 '24

Your handwriting looks so clean and beautiful. I'm jealous!! The ink you're using... is it KWZ Honey? But it looks a little bit darker?

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Thank you.

The ink is Ambre de Birmanie by Herbin. I love it!

1

u/Careful_Muffin1203 Sep 13 '24

I admire your handwriting. They’re very beautiful!

1

u/OldHeadYoungDude69 Sep 13 '24

“55, Male.”

1

u/Neither994 Sep 13 '24

What's your pen? I want to practice with the same tool as you xx.

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

It’s the awesome Pilot Metropolitan which you can find for less than $30 on Amazon. Fine nib.

2

u/Neither994 Sep 13 '24

Thank you my dude. Keep up that beautiful penmanship. Its very inspiring

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 13 '24

Thanks! And I appreciate your chiming in.

1

u/Humoris_Tumoris Sep 13 '24

Would you consider your handwriting speed as being fast? It’s incredibly gorgeous and I’m curious if you like to take your time or if this is how you scribble.

2

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 14 '24

I write a my a slightly slower pace than one would consider regular writing. I’m getting faster though 😊

1

u/SilentSolstice_82 Sep 14 '24

Everyone in this sub has good handwriting except for me :(

3

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 14 '24

I bet that you can develop your handwriting to what you’d like it to be. It’s takes mindful practice, slowing down, and patience. 😊

1

u/twbluenaxela Sep 14 '24

I usually don't really like a lot of the handwriting on this sub. Mine included! I see cursive that is illegible and messy, the only difference being that it's written using a fountain pen. This is the first time I've seen handwriting I actually really really like. No nonsense, clean, organized penmanship. Good job!

1

u/grimiskitty Sep 14 '24

Ohhh that's a beautiful ink color! :o

1

u/SBose21 Sep 14 '24

Thank you sir for sharing your handwriting with us

1

u/rosslyn_russ Sep 15 '24

I completed my first journal at age 7 and have since finished dozens more (now age 32). My most cherished possessions are the memories in those pages.

1

u/Squeekthecat Sep 16 '24

Great handwriting

1

u/Life-Court5792 Sep 16 '24

God, your handwriting... consider me envious (T_T)

1

u/ThoughtsAndSpells Sep 17 '24

Thank you 🙏🏼
