Creative Sharing my design

Post image
887 Upvotes

Today I am remembering that Jewish and Palestinian safety are intertwined. I am remembering to stand on my morals and keep myself educated and not close my eyes to things that are hard to look at. I am grieving for all of the souls we’ve lost and will continue to lose.

I designed this graphic to be shared by anyone who resonates with the message. The design was inspired by other art I’ve seen throughout the year of combining watermelons that represent Palestine with the Star of David which represents Judaism. “Never again” is a saying that is used in reference to the Holocaust. To me and my family, that meant no one anywhere should ever experience what our family and ancestors were put through. I hold this sentiment in my core.

As I reflect upon this past year, I see how far away we seem to be from peace. I pray that a year of endless war will bring perspective to those that choose to look away. On this earth, we are all siblings. We are all connected, and we are all responsible for one another. Today, I pray for true unity, genuine understanding and heartfelt empathy.

Love to all 💖✌️✡️🍉🕊️🤝

Creative Non-zionist mezuzah?

I want to buy a mezuzah for a family member for Hanukkah this year, but don’t want it to come from Israel or support a Zionist business. I understand that if the scroll is not from Eretz Yisrael, this technically makes it not kosher— I am okay with that. Any leads? The more artistically interesting, the better.

Update: Took some searching but I found some! Emily Rosenfeld is an artist who worked with JVP to do a fundraiser with mezuzahs she made, and they’re beautiful. Still open to other recs! And especially leads on kosher non-Israeli scrolls

Creative Jewish Diasporist: In Pursuit of a Palestinian-Jewish Future

So often, Jews and Palestinians are seen as separate, even diametrically opposed communities, yet what happens when we center those who hold both of these identities simultaneously?

In this episode Hadar Cohen joins the Jewish Diasporist for a conversation which weaves across personal, spiritual and historical perspectives to point us toward the Palestinian-Jewish future we need.

Find the link to the full conversation in the comments!

Big thanks to Aly Halpert for their continued musical support!

Creative The Jewish Labor Bund elections start soon!

The revitalized Bund is organizing again, and seeking to elect their first board.

Please join the Bund, and participate in the election. There is only a little homework to do, in reading the candidates' statements. It is not a competition. There are equal number of seats to candidates.

The new board will then create a platform for the members to vote on. The members can even dissolve the board again if the platform doesn't match the concerns of the members.

I'm a Marxist, but I've had very pleasant experiences (mostly :-) with the various Anarchists, Liberals, etc, who are interested in the Bund and its possibility as an organization for Jewish political agitation, education, healing, and cultural expression.

For more background and information, join and join the discord (which will be replaced with a more privacy oriented platform.) There were some organizational bumps that were dealt with over the summer. I'm not privy to them, but the results seem well organized by a broad group of collaboration-minded Jews.

My only critique is the yiddish-centric nature of the org. Human life is now globally connected, and we need to make every effort to uplift every colonized Jewish voice. Don't let Zionists monopolize and colonize into "Ivrit" all our global siblings!

Creative Symbol created for and with antizionist Jews in mind, but can be used by any antizionist

Thumbnail

LONG POST AHEAD: I am not Jewish (except some heritage) but im an artist and someone on Threads (Jewish anti zionist) wanted a symbol for Jews who are against zionism.

im using my throwaway account just in case, but my aim is to really not have my name attached to it if it is adopted just bc it feels weird to have that credit. so whoever wants to take credit instead its all yours. you guys can tweak it etc.

and PLS know i have good intentions but maybe ive crossed a line so sorry in advance if this is idk offensive?

But i tried to make something that couldnt be interpreted really any other way than intended.

The intent should be viewed as simple and complicated. Simple in terms of morals, complicated in the anti zionist Jewish identity like, you arent a monolith even within a common goal/cause. But that regardless how you are anti zionist and Jewish and what that means seperately and together

that this symbol right now (the genocide) should be a signal of "we stand by Palestinians and Palestine"

Because i know anti zionism isnt just about Palestine, its also about fighting antisemitism. I wanted this to be dimensional

Im not great with explaining how i feel and think but i really hope ive made it understandable

i personally prefer the simplicity of the version without the flower, but the flower adds meaning and recogniziability. I tried to think of different ways one might use it (emoji, sticker, etc) and even drew it like one might scrible on a notebook

Ill delete this if people say i should but otherwise take this and run with it. take credit, change it, build off etc.

also: when i say it doesnt represent a 2 state solution i mean in the neo liberal zionist leaning type way.

2 state out of strategy/necessity/etc as agreed upon by palestinians, this symbol could stand for.

overall it should be the equivalent to Listening to Palestinan needs, and also Fighting Antisemitism, and how it connects. It is solidarity and hope and fighting together and uplifting. thats the intention

EDIT: I forgot to mention, but the reason why i chose the magen david was bc i hate how the symbol has been "tainted" by israel. People see it and automatically think israel and what israel is doing. Ive seen quite a few people see the star and immediately talk about israel even if was just a Jewish person looking for a necklace. Its really unfortunate and yeah

i wanted a symbol that would pull away from that, so that when they see it they think Jewish and Good rather than Zionist and Israel and Genocide. People have started morphing it together with the swastika and it makes me sick

I was going to do blue but that would invoke israel. i was going to do gold or yellow but i felt that that could invoke another bad image. so i went with white to mean hope, and all that.

But if the community things a menorah might be better then have at it. Someone asked for a Menorah version so I made a few variations, with flames, simplified, etc.

anyone can redraw this and what not.

This in all, as symbols are supposed to unify and signal to other anti zionist jews. But it can also be used by non Jews, like how non Black people have BLM Fist stickers. But this symbol was specifically created with Anti zionist Jews in mind

Creative Finding community & solidarity thru artmaking!

Post image

made this print after connecting with Jewish antizionists local to me, had a little art Shabbat gathering where I started sketching the idea out, and then sold prints at an art market that someone hosted in their home where 100% of the sales went directly to mutual aid funds. (We raised a significant amt of money, for a fairly impromptu, private event!) Grateful for the connections I’ve made locally for the energy to create and stay active/present when the horror of what’s happening in our names makes me want to shut down.

The print spells out “teshuvah,” meaning return but also usually taken to mean repair/repentance, & is meaningful to the high holidays as the beginning of a new year & the time to make teshuvah for our mistakes & harm we’ve caused. The symbols are keys of return, watermelon, patterns from a keffiyeh, & olive branches. This is my first block print in a verrrry long time so please be kind about the quality :)

What methods would they have used, and if possible, share photos of a similar manual (hand created) process and what it might have looked like.

Thank you.

Creative Alternative symbol for Jewishness that isn't a Magen David

I have a Magen David necklace that was given to me that I don't feel comfortable wearing anymore due to the symbol's historic and current ties to Zionism. I would still like to wear jewelry that has Jewish symbolism but isn't Zionist. I get that many of these symbols are also prominent in many Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and Mediterranean cultures, which I kind of like as a symbol of unity.

Some ideas I had were a hamsa (aka a Hand of Fatima), a Nazar (the eye that wards against the "Evil Eye"), and a pomegranate. I kind of like the idea of wards against the Evil Eye, as I am also of Japanese descent and the concept of the Evil Eye and protecting yourself from it also exists in Japanese folklore (commonly known as Jashi).

However, I don't know if this is just silly and maybe I shouldn't wear any jewelry with Jewish symbols on it. What do you all think?

Edit: Thank you so much to everyone for your insights and ideas. I feel like I agree with not letting Zionists take a symbol that resonates and represents so many Jewish people. My Magen David necklace was actually a one of a kind piece made by a Jewish-Finnish designer and it was given to me by a person who means a lot to me. I love it and it broke my heart the more I read how Zionists basically seized the symbol in the late 19th century. I need to reflect on this more, but I do feel more empowered to wear my Magen David as an Anti-Zionist now. Thank you all ❤️

Creative Gathering a Local Lulav

Post image
65 Upvotes

Sukkot reminds us of the dwellings our ancestors lived in when they were fleeing Egypt, they are the temporary dwellings of refugees. Yet settlers have bastardized the holiday to be about occupying land, and often use the plants of the Lulav to claim Sukkot as a Zionist Holiday. In The Jewish Diapsorist’s first ever Patreon bonus episode, we break from the traditional plants native to Palestine-Israel, and explain the significance of adapting the tradition to our own ecosystem in creating our own Diasporist Jewish practice.

We ended up building our Lulav with Coast Live Oak, Douglas Fir, California Mugwort and a single pulled French Broom.

Creative Creating Anti-Zionist Jewish Services

I notice a few people talking about being isolated form their communities and are looking for anti-Zionist synagogues or connections to culture and religious practice. I know some that do specific events, but none with weekly Shabbat. I’m not a rabbi or in and way qualified, but is anyone interested in discovering or seeing if there is a way to bring weekly Shabbat for anti Zionist religious service or a Jewish anti Zionist cultural space- like maybe a zoom or online?

Delete if not appropriate or comment with ongoing Shabbat or other cultural online options.

Creative Looking for non-Zionist wedding rings

Hello! I have found plenty of non-Zionist Judaica stores with beautiful work, but I am specifically looking for rings with "Ani LeDodi VeDodi Li" on them from an anti-Zionist source. Would love other bridal jewelry or any other anti-Zionist recommendations

Creative non-Zionist Judaica?

Finding this community has made me want to embrace my Judaism more than I ever have before. I’d love to buy something like a necklace or whatever from a brand that isn’t Zionist though. Like I love Susan Alexandra but I’m not sure where the company stands I don’t need to be throwing money at Zionists. Any leads?

Creative Podcast About Anti-Zionist Jewish Education—Ep 7 Jess Salomon

Our newest episode is out featuring comedian Jess Salomon.

In this episode, comedian Jess Salomon talks about growing up in Montreal and "getting the Zionism" from her famous synagogue. She then tells us about her former life as a human rights lawyer in The Hague (and offers an impeccable Dutch accent). There's also a lot of conversation around learning about Palestine and Palestinians through love and comedy. Throughout the episode, Jess tells us about the small yet robust world of anti-Zionist Jewish comedy. The episode also includes us imagining an anti-Zionist remake of The Jazz Singer!

Creative What books are you reading lately?

I haven't read any new books recently, but I have a large backlog.

I did listen to the audiobook for 'Project Hail Mary' (from the author of 'The Martian'). I love sci-fi, and this was a great book.

Vague but somewhat spoiler-y praises I have for it: very life-affirming story, and I loved the friendship between the 2 central characters despite being so different. It was inspiring even, especially when I think about world-conflicts IRL.

How about you?

Like many here I’m sure, Tikkun olam is a central tenent of my Judaism. I think this article does a beautiful job articulating the wider scope of what repairing the world might take. We ought to integrate religion, politics, ethics, and science, and I think this is an interesting approach. How can we bring these ideas more into our daily lives?
