Celebration As Someone Who Grew Up Muslim. I’m Thankful My Friend Showed Me This Subreddit

I grew up in a Muslim household. In a large Muslim community in Michigan

I was always told Jews have no soul or care what they do to the Palestinians and what happens in GAZA

I found that hard to believe but considering I haven’t spent much time with many Jews I accepted I guess it must be true.

When the war started a year ago and I saw so many innocent lives lost and families who were being destroyed by the Isreali army

My hatred for Jews grew even stronger. I told a friend about 6 months ago why I hated Jews and Isreal and how they are all evil.

My friend was confused and said “don’t you think that’s a bit racist?”

I said no I see the images and what’s happening in Gaza all Jews are evil.

He said “well have you actually talked to someone who is Jewish or family is from Isreal?”

I said well no… but it has to be true. He said he was Jewish and his family is from Isreal… I was shocked since I just assumed he was American

He said his family isn’t very religious

And he himself doesn’t talk about it much… since he wasn’t born there or been there himself… but wanted me to know not all Jews are in agreement with with what’s happening in Gaza

He said his family also disapprove of what’s happening and I shouldn’t just assume every Jew is racist and wants all Palestinians dead.

I of course apologized and didn’t know he was Jewish

He said he understands seeing the news makes him upset too… which I agreed with

He said he comes to this subreddit and I should visit it and try not to see all the Israeli people the same and he was right.

I’m so thankful for this sub and all the people here. We may not be able to solve all the problems and evils of the world

But you guys give me so much hope.

I do believe one day Jews and Palestinians could come together in love and community one day

It may not be tomorrow or next month

But you guys do such a good job here fighting the good fight and speaking truth!

And as a middle eastern man. This may not mean much… but I just want to say thank you to all of you!

May you all find peace and love in this chaotic world of ours :)

Celebration 🕊️

Hello Jewish friends,

I’m a Palestinian-American Muslim. As I was researching, I came across this sub and joined because I genuinely want to learn more about the our Jewish allies & even the struggles they maybe facing.

Although I should be studying, I spent 2-3 hours just scrolling through posts and comments. I didn’t except to be this emotionally moved by some of what gets posted 🥺😓.

But wow 😮‍💨

I don't know how much of a difference this will make, but I want to say that as a Palestinian, I hear you. I stand by you and appreciate your courageous voice as you speak up on this madness. I know this may have caused some serious relationship strains. Which may affect you emotionally and mentally esp with everything else going on in the world.

It’s been a rough past year, it felt like 10 days but also 10 years all at once.

However, when I think of human beings and human systems, the older I get the more I think there is only one ingredient. Love.

I wish, I could go on longer, or wax philosophical like they say. But like many, I’m exhausted. & I sense that many of you are as well.

So with that, I send you all love with every (tired) ounce of me. & just wanted to express that I am deeply moved by your stance.

Take care of yourselves. 🕊️❤️

Celebration I'm a teacher, earlier this week a parent (student in a different class) aggressively confronted me for wearing a shirt with a small Palestinian flag. One of my students saw the interaction and how I explained my reasoning and stood up for my beliefs. Today she gave me this note.

Celebration DIY Menorah

Happy early Chanukah! I will be away from home for the first few days of Chanukah and was going to just make a crappy make shift menorah. I had some clay laying around and decided to make something more meaningful instead. If you haven't made a menorah before I highly suggest it it is a very beautiful experience. I can't wait to light this guy up. Bless you all.

Happy Hanukkah to all who are celebrating!

I’d also love to hear more about how you’re celebrating, and, as a bit of a foodie, I’m intrigued by all the different kinds of food you’re eating as part of your celebrations.

Celebration Struggling this holiday

I don’t really know other Jewish people other than my family and their friends back home and they’re pretty right wing, but I’m pretty sure even my ‘liberal’ sister is a Zionist. I’m just too ashamed to ask her.

I live in a Christian right wing area now also so the few Jews who do live here are most likely pro-israel as well as the Christians. I do have a good group of friends around me who support me and obviously know where my heart lies, but I just feel so shameful about being Jewish honestly at the moment. I know almost everyone around me assumes I must be israeli/pro israel and that that’s synonymous with Jewish.

I did light my menorah because it felt important to power through and defy my shame but it’s just been a tough night. I hope others are enjoying the holidays though and are surrounded by like minded people this season.

Celebration Nan Goldin ruffling some feathers in pro-genocide Germany

No English articles about it (yet). Chat GPT translation cause I'm lazy:

https://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/gaza-krieg-und-kunst-nan-goldin-ausstellung-sorgt-fuer-eklat-in-der-neuen-nationalgalerie-a-73d24821-76c3-40e5-9057-1a0bd3327ae6

Nan Goldin began her speech with a moment of silence for the victims in Gaza, Israel, and Lebanon. In front of dozens of pro-Palestinian activists, the Jewish photographer criticized Israel's actions and Germany's stance on the Middle East conflict. An attempt by the director of the Neue Nationalgalerie, Klaus Biesenbach, to respond was drowned out by chants. The event was originally intended to mark the opening of a new exhibition featuring Goldin's photographs.

"I have decided to use this exhibition as a platform to express my moral outrage over the genocide in Gaza and Lebanon," Goldin said on stage. "Germany is home to the largest Palestinian diaspora in Europe. Yet protests are being suppressed with police dogs."

I have basically no interest in photography so I didn't know her before, but man. She's great, isn't she?

Now keep in mind that in Germany, while generally pro-Palestinian Jewish voices are supressed just like everyone else's, you are at least a bit privileged as a Jew to speak your mind. If she wasn't Jewish I'm sure her exhibition would have been cancelled beforehand. That's not a criticism of her of course, I'm sure she's aware, and may have even mentioned it in her speech.

Celebration Early happy Hanukkah to everyone here.

Sorry I've missed so many other of your holidays, and sorry about it being early, but I wanted to go ahead and say happy Hanukkah to all of you right now before I end up busy or distracted. I wanted to thank all of you here for your patience, your kindness and your willingness to educate others. I grieve for those of you who have had to cut off community or family, and who have had to witness so much harm being done in your name. You are all such amazingly strong people to cling fast to your beliefs when it would be so much more comfortable and easy to sit the fence and say nothing, and your virtue and empathy puts my ancestors who participated in things they shouldn't have to shame. You all inspire me to be a better person, and I thank you all for being here. I hope that maybe this time next year we will see Palestine is closer to freedom, even if that is a big hope. Thank you all.

Celebration Free Palestine Menorah and Candles

I made this for Hanukkah 2024.

Hanukkah is all about resisting oppression and fighting for cultural survival. But in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, critics point out that Israel, which represents Jewish sovereignty, is now seen as the oppressor. Palestinians, the weaker side in the conflict, are viewed as fighting for their survival and land—similar to how the Maccabees fought back in the day.

Celebration Favourite space on reddit

Hello

I hope it’s ok to be part of this community and not be Jewish. I just wanted to express my joy at being here and how this is my favourite space on reddit. Life has felt terrible (extra terrible since oct 7th) and im just holding on to every solid and safe space I can find. I am sorry a lot of you are hurting in real life, i read your stories about how some of you feel alienated from your friends, family, local communities of faith, and yet you keep on persevering with your morals. I wish i could be your family and friend in real life. You are everything that is good in this life and I only wish the best for you all. With much gratitude 🙏🏽

Celebration Recommendations for children’s Hanukkah book?

I ordered a $6 kids book just thinking it’d gloss over the major points. I’m not religious at all but I enjoy the cultural aspect of lighting the candles and I wanted to teach my kid the history. But this book had a lot of info about the Greeks and the violence and I’m like 🤷🏼‍♀️ why is that necessary? I found another at Barnes and noble today and it was great it just said the Jews chased the mean soldiers away, great. But then it went in depth into “on the first night we get this kind of gift and we eat this food” and stuff and we don’t do all that.

I just want a short illustrated story about how the oil lasted 8 days.

Celebration God works in mysterious ways 😊

For some background: a few yrs ago I developed what turned out to be an inherited skin condition (dad had it too but I didn't know yet).

Anyway, bc I don't like using pharmaceuticals, I spent a small fortune on various over the counter skin meds for everything from scabies to eczema, none of which it turned out to be. I even have tons of antibacterial bar soaps, and tablets to make water potable in case it was something in our water supply.

Most of this was unused.

Now I find out these are the very things they need in Gaza bc of the water situation and health issues there!

I am shipping everything to a Muslim/Christian charity working in Gaza.

Another nice thing: I was coming out of the post office after shipping the parcel, when a man in his 70s or 80s held the door for me and commented very positively on my pro-Palestine tee shirt! This is a Jewish neighborhood still, and he was Jewish!
