Thank you! She is so precious 🥹 the only one that isn’t impressed is her now big brother that is having a hard time adjusting but in the 1 week he has started to play with her so we are taking small steps. I’ve had many cats over the years but they were all older when I got them so this is my first time with a kitten this little! I’m enjoying every second with tiny beans 🥰

My husband and I actually went through the same thing recently! We have an 8 year old boy, and added a 10 week old kitten to the family. It definitely took him a few weeks (and feeding on the opposite sides of a door) to understand what was going on, but a year later the older boy has really come out of his shell, and plays with the younger one like he’s an “annoying younger brother”😂 Older boy has even started playing with more toys and has gotten spunkier since we got the kitten. It’s been adorable to watch, and I hope the same happens for you all as well :3 the funniest thing of it all? We couldn’t get the older boy to understand a scratching board until he watched the kitten use it. Then he was all about it

That’s so great to hear! I can tell right now our older boy looks at the kitten like “you’re so annoying, go away!” 😂 he has started to play a little with her which is great because he is the most chill cat ever and always has been even when he showed up at our doorstep when he was 4-5 months old and was super skinny. He immediately took him in and has been with our family ever since. We tried different toys and stuff but he never really cared for it so I’m happy to see him have a sibling he can play with. I’m sure he’ll learn different things from the kitten too 😉

My husband has been talking about giving our 11 year old baby a sibling and your experience makes me more agreeable to the idea. I’d love to have another void. I hope it works out for OP. 😻

You should! It takes time for everyone to adjust, but when we gave our 6 and 7 year old cats x 3 a new kitten…a few months later at a checkup, the vet congratulated us on our one 7 year old cat no longer being overweight. He asked if the cat was eating less or changing his habits. We realized it was his activity levels- he was running around so much playing with his new lil sis 🥹 so cute.

That so awesome for your older cat! Mine too is a lot more active with the kitten around because every chance she gets she is bothering big brother to play 🤣 he often gives me the “you’re so annoying” look but I can tell he’s adjusting well and care for her. If the kitten is asleep he goes over to her and reaches to her to make sure she’s ok and it’s the sweetest thing ever 🥹

Definitely agree and you should get a kitten!! It’s been so much fun and family bonding time since we all are spending time together with the kitten and our older cat. My older boy is a mommas boy so it’s been very important to us that I still spend time with my boy and even have time just with him only so he doesn’t feel like he is being neglected.

Your daughter must be thrilled to bits. How did you “wrap” the kitty who btw looks adorable?

1 week to adjust is pretty good! Some cats take months or years to get along.

What a sweet little baby! I know your daughter will love her!

u/Several-Cycle8290 2d ago

She loves her so much already! She has even been good about cleaning her litter box and reminding me of feeding time so it has been a great opportunity to learn responsibilities for a pet! 😊

u/palomabarcelona 2d ago

I love that you are teaching her about how to take care of a pet! It helps so much with building empathy and a sense of responsibility.

I am SUCH a sucker for calico babies!! I've had three in my life so far

u/Several-Cycle8290 1d ago

The moment I saw her at the Humane Society I knew she was going to be the kitten we wanted to adopt! I got nervous hoping my daughter would feel the same way since technically it’s her kitten but fortunately she felt the same exact way and within 10 mins we’re were signing the paperwork 🤗 she is our first calico!

There is a long haired Calico girl on my neighbors porch who makes a celebrity appearance once every few months and she is so talkative with the softest little meows. My mom also had a Calico named Daisy and I would love love a Calico

She really is!! She has been asking for a kitten for years after our older cat showed up at our door step, he was about 4-5 months old and once he was older she started wanting a young kitten since we didn’t have that with Sushi. She is super excited! 😆

What a beautiful cat! And is she already spayed?

2

u/Several-Cycle8290 1d ago

Yes she is 😊 we adopted her from the Humane Society and they spay/neuter all their cats and dogs that are up for adoption. She actually had just gotten spayed the day before we adopted her so we are being very careful.

Pets aren't gifts and you should not have ingrained that in your daughter...

u/lydiaxaddams 1d ago

Sour puss, did you ever pause to think maybe the kid wanted a kitten?

I wanted a dog. I used my 8th birthday to convince my mom and I got my puppy.

There is nothing wrong with a parent giving their young child a pet. It would be a different story if the daughter were grown, living independently, and given a pet she did not ask for. That's not the case here.

My daughter has been begging for a kitten and we as a family have been looking for the best timing for an additional pet. This wasn’t impulsive at all. Our older cat just showed up to our doorstep 5 years ago and he’s definitely a mommas boy so my daughter felt like she missed out on the tiny kitten years with our older cat, he was 4-5 months old when he showed up and my daughter was also very young. She wanted to experience having a tiny kitten so we decided financially and other situations wise it’s a good timing to get the additional cat we as a family have been wanting. We let our daughter pick and cat she can bond with so she can have a pet that is “hers” since she feels our boy is “moms”

What a beauty! Merry Christmas! Is her name Merry?

3

u/Several-Cycle8290 1d ago

My daughter named her Mochi since her brother brothers name is Sushi 🤗

HA! Kitten fooled you - your daughter is the Christmas present to kitten.

2

u/Several-Cycle8290 23h ago

Very true! She loves her new home! She wasn’t at the Humane Society for long, they said she came in, got spayed and we adopted her on the next day she became available for adoption!

u/KelenHeller_1 22h ago

Multi-colored beans - so cute!

As a 9yo, I would’ve been over the moon. We have had cats since I was a crawling baby and it feels strange not to have them (among other animal friends — dogs, horses, stray chickens, a ferret, a rabbit, even a baby catfish saved from a puddle when he was cut-off from the river).

I’m so glad she’s being taught responsibility and empathy early so she’ll be a great cat parent and model for others.

1

u/iagreewithyouall 15h ago

You are responsible for its health and well-being, not the child - I'm sure you know this.👍

remember:

kitty is not a toy.

she is not disposable.

she is now family for the next 10-15 years.

she is the most faithful family you, or your daughter, will ever find.
