Future Interest 'IMSA official' has urged Aston Martin/Heart of Racing to drop mufflers for "a more intense shriek" at Sebring

Pretty funny when the officials are like make it louder

Good on 'em though.
Some of the biggest complaints about other motorsports currently is that they're too quiet or have lost a bit or grunt. IMSA is fully aware that it is on the verge of a huge boom (if not at the start of one) and is listening to all the complaints about everything else.
Won't allow another team on the grid F1? We just signed 2 new manufacturers!
2 car limit in WEC? Forget that, come on over Lamborghini!
NASCAR cup cars should be like the cars on the road? Check out GTD!
IndyCar too quiet? Hey Aston Martin.....

IMSA has far more strict entry rules than WEC.
IF, SCG, Alpine, Peugeot, Vanwall, all blocked.

Peugeot can enter because they sell more than 2500 cars per year worldwide. Stellantis would probably rebrand the effort though.

Dodge is a dead brand at this point, same with Chrysler.
I don't see Stellantis sticking around after 2025.

GG already said this is a non issue and that the car will be louder come Qatar/Sebring.

Let's go fully loud at Daytona, it'll echo off that grandstand so well!
My first time in 2018, the two C7 GTLMs out together sounded amazing

They are not racing at Daytona sadly

That has genuinely pushed me off the fence of whether to buy Sebring tickets this year. I'm going to Daytona but hadn't planned on Sebring initially.

Do they have a reason not to?

FIA WEC has noise rules. And maybe they don't want to try to tune the car for both that configuration and IMSA?

Noise regulations both at the governing body level and at the individual track level. Laguna Seca has the worst ones, but many tracks have them. Road America can't have night races because of deals with the local farmers.

IMSA's days at Laguna and Road America are unrestricted noise days during hot track hours. But be damned if you fire something up in the paddock outside of the daytime hours.

I'm still curious how Grid Life was able to do a music festival at Road America.

I believe Monza has noise rules due to local residents. They also try to limit the number of annual track running days.

Noise and power restrictions. Developing mufflers for multiple different circuits is expensive, also their engine is significantly more powerful than regulations allow, so using larger silencers, help kill some of the power that they can't get down from using other restriction methods like fuel flow limitations.

I like the cut of their jib.

What’s a jib?

It's a type of sail: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jib

Duxk that mess. Best part of GTP is the different sounds.

The old Aston prototype was quiet too. Whatever it was called.

Lola Aston DBR1-2 or Lola B09/60 depending on the day. They had good sized silencers on that one too, lovely sound but nearly inaudible in a pack of cars when I saw it at Sebring.

It sucks they won’t be at Daytona. I’d love to hear those cars roaring on the banks.

Why would they run mufflers if its not required? So now I understand why it sounded, well, muffled in the videos of it testing at Daytona

No where the hell is this kinda of thinking from Liberty? Surely we can have V10 hybrid engines in F1, but no we got have some guys imitation of an F1 car through a can…

The car did sound noticeably louder in the Qatar testing video from earlier this week.

“Hey sorry if the car is too loud” - Heart of Racing
“Yo turn that shit up” - IMSA

I wonder if the muffler is used to decrease HP.
1
u/Accomplished_Clue733 1d ago
Typically that's done through the engine mapping as it will vary race to race with the BOP.

Knowing that IMSA is headquartered out of Florida, I'm kinda picturing the "IMSA official" as a guy in a #3 Dale cut-off shirt telling them to go full party mode.
I know that's not probably how it happened, but that's how I'm picturing it.
