Happened across this beauty on one of my delivery routes. Hopefully they don’t leave it outside for too long.

Where is it? That is the last “shovel-nosed” unlimited hydroplane to win a race, winning in San Diego in 1986

I was at that race! Although I was a too young to retain the memories.

The cabover U-80 is honestly one of my top5 boats, I even ran the conventional version of it in an rfactor racing league where we had vintage hydroplanes

It’s in a mountain town in southern(ish) California.

Oh neat! I played rFactor HydroMod a while back, never played online though, I was too young. I’m heavily involved in HydroSim though, the successor to HydroMod

Ah I miss Hydromod. I was the chief steward of the TNH (Tuesday Night Hydros) where we rotated modern, GP, and vintage series. Couple time TNH champion and UHL Hydromod Gold Cup winner Aaron Stewart with the U-112

Hey I recognize that name! I watched all of Craig’s videos on YouTube back in the day, I was a big fan haha. You should hop on HydroSim some time!

I don’t have a computer anymore that’d be able to run HydroSim. I’m very impressed with what Scott has put together though.

For a while it seemed like it was just the standard modern style hydros, but while scrolling through the Facebook page it looked like they had gotten a Lucero style piston with a cowling (1989 U-2 Oberto with George Woods Jr was my No.1 favorite and I ran that in our modern series— my dad, who had been president of the RC division of APBA for a while, ran an old U55 Oberto and we’d gotten to know the Oberto family pretty well, even got to go to their lakeside house at Lake Washington— same year the ELam Conrad— happened) but also I thought I saw that GP boats were happening? Any vintage boats yet? racing the vintages was easily my favorite part of HydroMod

Yeah, we have both Piston and Turbine modern unlimiteds and GP boats. Vintage boats are in the works but the focus currently is on making new courses and refining boat physics

U-80 was built and raced by Bob Patterson of So. California. Raced under the Miss Vans P-X name when I was around SoCal. Also saw that race in San Diego. Saw many Thunder boat races there. I was a Crackerbox Racer in the 70's. Rode in many of Patterson cracker hulls. Great time, good memories.
