Middle School Math—Pending OP Reply ["IM2" Math, Statistics] How does one draw the Venn diagram/find any information in this problem? It seemed like a lot of guesswork when I attempted it.

in the box where you wrote 12, it should say 8. this is because the 12 in the original problem refers to both sections in the euler diagram that are latte and espresso. similar logic applies to everything else. if this wasn’t enough to get you through the problem, lmk because i know exactly how to solve it

Thank you so much!! I was confused because an earlier problem (that didn't use different language to refer to things) required the logic I'd used at first.

Only lattes+Only espressos+Only cappuccinos+Lattes and espressos only+Espressos and cappuccinos only+Lattes and cappuccinos only+All three drinks

4+5+4+8+5+4+4=34

Total patrons−Patrons who like at least one drink=50−34=16

Start at the center and work your way out.

You've already corrected the "8" to a "4" by subtracting the 4 in the center. Do the same to the 12 and 9.

Then do the same process to the 20, 22, 17, and 50.

I think this is a poorly worded question. I believe where it says that the patrons like both drink 1 and drink 2, it's actually inclusive of the 4 that like all 3. It doesn't mention the word 'only' in the sentence. It doesn't say they only like lattes and cappuccinos. So I would pretty much start at the outside and work inwards. You have 20 people total liking lattes. So you would do 20-(12-4)-(8-4), and that's the lattes only section of the venn diagram. Weird they would do it like this but you will get questions like that.
