Picture/Video Mercedes posted a very dark image, I just brightened it up as much as I could. Welcome W13?

I wish they would go back to silver. Black car , black asphalt - there is not the energy / excitement of Red Bull, Ferrari etc ....
56
u/Lunanautdude Jan 02 '22
I swear I saw somewhere that they were going back to silver

u/FnElrshw Jan 02 '22
They are. Toto confirmed it like 6 months ago and it keeps coming up as a rumour/story when journalists have fuck all to write about
10
u/stq66 Gordon Murray Jan 02 '22
They confirmed they will race in Silver in 22. But this is even less energetic, exciting than black IMO
-29
u/Sharkymoto Rory Byrne Jan 01 '22
didnt they get rid of drs?
55
u/TBrown1609 Jan 01 '22
Drs will still be available
-38
u/notaneggspert Jan 02 '22
DRS hardware will be installed. But might not be available to drivers.
12
u/Rowlandum Jan 02 '22
Drs available this season in case racing needs it. If cars a close enough to race without then it may be removed in 2023
20
Jan 02 '22
No. They will if the racing this year proves it is not needed but I doubt that will happen considering the slipstream will also be less effective.
5
u/SkooDaQueen Jan 02 '22
Won't slipstream be even more effective now? Like you are in cleaner are all the time now right?
13
Jan 02 '22
Following through corners will be easier because less downforce is lost but at the same time less aero parts means not as large of a hole in the air on the straight. At least that is my understanding of it, I may be wrong.
9
u/uTukan Jan 02 '22
Clean air is the opposite of what you think it is. Dirty air is actually beneficial on straights - there's less air resistance. Clean air just means it's closer to no car in front = worse slipstream.
The point why clean air is beneficial is because of corners. In dirty (disturbed, less resistant) air, you have much less downforce.

u/codename474747 Jan 02 '22
It might be but considering last year's cars felt disturbed if a car in front was about 3 seconds in front of them, slashing dirty air was the main priority and hopefully they can get close enough to get that slipstream even if there's a bit less of it
Aero is the enemy of good racing tbh, let's hope the new ground effect era at least mitigates some of its worst excesses
1
Jan 02 '22
100% agree, hopefully it will still have the benefits of super high downforce with the close racing that makes it enjoyable to watch.

Facts they won't reveal their car until the last moment. That's just how it works lol

I just read somewhere that may remover drs at some point of the season o in the next season...did you hear anything about this? XD

u/Skivil Jan 02 '22
It looks like a model car, similar to the ones that the fia have showed before due to the lack of drs actuator, adjustors om the front wing and most importantly mercades not being stupid.
172
Jan 01 '22
It is the same car FIA showed in rainbow colours months ago, it has probably nothing to do with their car for next year.
-6
u/Godly_Panda Jan 01 '22
Wrong, less front wing winglets, side pod is larger for air intake. Rear wing is different
36
u/Zani0n Jan 01 '22
I'm really not sure why you are downvoted.
The rainbow colored car from silverstone had a VERY flat nose with the highest part in the center.
The sidepod had a more curvy form with the top turning down at the chassis.
The lower part of the rear wing is more curvy on the Merc picture.
ComparisonThere was another nose in renders of the rainbow car, but the nose ended on top of the front wing.
It is closer to the leaked picture that was seen before.
But again the front tip of the merc is more pointy than the car seen. And then there is this picture
I'm not entirely convinced the Merc we see here is actually the car Merc is driving. But it is NOT the ranbow colour car they showed at silverstone

u/miaomiaomiao Jan 01 '22
It's an exact copy of this FIA demo car: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FIBaBEcXwAQje-Q?format=jpg&name=large.
15
u/sissipaska Jan 02 '22
Copy, or the demo car itself.
Wouldn't be surprised if FIA contracted F1 teams for manufacturing the demo cars, and now one of them is back in the birth garage.
1
u/Godly_Panda Jan 01 '22
Its cool. Guess no one is looking at the facts lol. But nice added points as well man.

Jan 02 '22
Could it be that Mercedes, and maybe all the teams, use some kind of proof of concept with all the basic principles of the new regulation, build their own mockup out of it to see how everything fits in, gearbox, engine, suspension, and then work from that to try to squeeze performance out of it ?
51
u/Kingeuyghn Jan 01 '22
Why do people keep posting this and thinking it’s actually Merc’s 2022 car???? Am I that much smarter than everyone else?
19
u/coasterreal Jan 02 '22
If the Merc social media team was that dumb to post a dark image that still contained all of this info in the image, I'd be shocked. It's most likely a troll because they can't be that obtuse to just darken and image and not realize it's not too hard to pull back the data from the dark.
9
u/ExtensionAwkward5843 Jan 02 '22
It’s literally the spec car with a Mercedes logo on it, it’s not a troll just a way of building excitement for the new season i suppose.
-7
u/coasterreal Jan 02 '22
That's a weird way to build hype, at least to me. But i didn't think they were that dumb anyways. They're typically rather clever.
19
u/Skendyman1 Jan 01 '22
No way, it will have more aerodynamic come launch, and even more come first test and race

That wing! I wanna touch it!

Also this car looks way too good
If I remember my rule changes, the engineers have to come with some performance rules loophole that the regulations weren't designed for to make the cars look as ugly as possible
2000s all the aero flick ups and swoops on any flat surface 2012 the step noses 2014 oh my god literally everything bar maybe the mercedes and then not by much 2017 the shark fins and the width of the things

There's a lot of different mockups that were made for promotion.
But this image from Mercedes matched perfectly this mockup

u/scottybee915 Jan 03 '22
I’m imagining that this is the launch car, and that the car showing up at testing will look nothing like it.
4
u/Dragonfiery_RDF Jan 02 '22
Maybe it's just the car to test liveries on? That's why it's still black and unpainted but they are willing to show us

u/Zooport21 Jan 02 '22
It’s real just a mock up not indicative of what the actual car will be https://twitter.com/bradleyphilpot/status/1477387761577562116?s=21
3
u/Teabx Jan 02 '22
Its not the W13. Almost identical to a show car that has been displayed before.

u/Aljaz_93455 Jan 01 '22
I bet we won't see the real car until testing or even the firts race. They will be hiding it as long as they can. Even in previous years for example teams only revealed liverys, not the actual cars.
1
u/yellowhamm3rr Jan 01 '22
how is it possible to not see the car during testing
3
u/OreoCheesecake2 Aston Martin Jan 03 '22
Using an underdeveloped car for testing. And only bringing the full car for the first race

Yeah, to be fair, they wouldn't even admit that they didn't use their development tokens until after the season. They also blocked off the aero surfaces on a car during an offseason with minimal rule changes. I don't think they'll give away anything before they have to.
1
u/JackstaWRX Jan 02 '22
Its just a mock up.. look at rear wing, no drs, plus they already said w13 will be silver again
1
u/pajamasss Jan 02 '22
This is just the same model as the FIA show car with a slightly different nose and front wing. No way any team would show their actual car before pre-season testing.
1
u/FnElrshw Jan 02 '22
It's got the same wings, airbox, sidepods, mirrors, etc as the fom showcar and it's missing all the details like flap adjusters and drs actuators. It's not the w13
1
u/bardzi Jan 02 '22
they also posted a shot of it with livery on in youtube. not sure if that’s the final design
1
u/JanusHeimdallr Jan 02 '22
Debates aside, has anyone besides liveries seen different mockup design approaches that are relevant to the new rules? Just to see how different the cars may be? It seems to me like the car may be more similar than different from now on
0
u/rublehousen Jan 01 '22
I like it for the H.R Giger look, but i dont like it for the racing car look.

Man I forgot about those weird wheel cover things, hoped they'd have been smoothed out of the regulations by now...
-3
u/MoJoSportsPodcast Jan 02 '22
I think they’ve built to F1 spec to get the data in the wind tunnel and are now examining the rules to see what they can change to provide an advantage, this isn’t the final car in any way
-19
1
u/OreoCheesecake2 Aston Martin Jan 02 '22
Definitely not. The front wing is a 3 element design. When it has to be 4 for this year. The only two differences between this car and the Silverstone show are is the shape of the front wing and that it has a narrow nose instead of the wide nose the FIA used

u/GeorgeMoss75 Jan 03 '22
They don't care, 2022 is about more HP in the PU. The aero is the same for everyone.

Can confirm. This is the w13, I was paid 13 euros plus food stipend to design it. That’s all I can say
1
u/Dan23DJR Jan 31 '22
I think this is just the model that FOM released back at Silverstone but with a black livery on it. There’s no DRS actuator for a start and the side pods are the exact same, also the Venturi “fences” I think they’re called (those fins/dividers on the Venturi inlet are the same too
But thanks for tryna keep us entertained lol

If anyone honestly thinks any team is going to reveal ANY aspect about their car before the official reveal is extremely naive.
