Picture/Video Mercedes W14 floor revealed in Monaco FP3 after Hamilton's barrier contact

This is such a rare picture. Mercedes wont be happy. It’s interesting to see how the skidplate is mounted for once.

u/valteri_hamilton69 May 27 '23
I mean the floors are very precise so even images aren't really enough to replicate them
28
u/42_c3_b6_67 May 27 '23
Yeah, the value would probably be broad strokes conceptual ideas. Someone with expertise could probably gather quite a few things

Toto said the crane operator could have been from circ-du-soleil and he could have just put it on a truck. Definitely not thrilled.

u/Hudsonm_87 May 27 '23
For once? Also nobody is gonna copy merc. Red Bull had the floor exposed last year and nobody copied it

u/ShpetimToshi May 27 '23
RedBull or AstonMartin should fear these pictures if they crash..

If I remember right RB and Ferrari leaked yesterday.

SF-23 yes but not the RB19 fully like this..

u/lshallo May 27 '23
Perez just exposed the floor. Whoops
21
u/Radical_X75 May 27 '23
Perez masterplan, crash and expose the floor so Mercedes can copy and catch up with the new upgrades to challenge Max!!
3
May 27 '23
horner who heard perez recite his plan, put a fake floor and remotely crashed checo knowing the car would go up in the air. the floor was a draft of rb-2.

TBH F`1 floors are so precise these days down to the milimetre. Sure you could try to copy it from a photo but without a miracle you're not getting anywhere close to the performance that they do.

Well… there you go

Yeah. Came here as well to comment that.

Checo just crashed in Saint Devote and as you can guess, the car was lifted by a crane with many photographers taking pictures of the floor plan.

Looks like there's more wear on the rear end of the plank.
15
u/AdrianInLimbo May 27 '23
A bit, but not too horrible, and the skid blocks are back there as well, so anything beyond normal bottoming there would be pretty evident with sparking.

I still find it amazing that despite all of the advanced materials and technology they have, the FIA still dictates that they have to put a plank of wood on the floor. Absolutely hilarious every time you see it.
42
u/SuperbHeadphones May 27 '23
It's not wood tho
The material of the plank is free, but it must be homogeneous with a specific gravitybetween 1.3 and 1.45, or if pocketed be made from a bonded assembly the upper0.5mm of which must have a specific gravity of between 1.3 and 1.65 and theremainder, excluding pockets, be made from an homogeneous material with a specificgravity of between 1.3 and 1.45.

Oh ok interesting, apparently they’ve switched from wood to resin. Learn something new everyday I guess, I always thought they just stuck to wood.

Wait. Why the fuck is there a piece of wood on the bottom of the car? Lmao

That's actually resin, but it looks like wood indeed, and it used to be wood.

I have become fascinated with the aerodynamics of the floor of these cars. The way they direct air and use low pressure to suck the car to the track is so interesting.
12
u/dis_not_my_name May 27 '23
What are those "steps" for?
3
u/winstonzys May 27 '23
Just a guess but maybe shedding vortecies to delay separation on the diffuser so they could get more expansion?
4
u/Cwmcwm May 27 '23
You mean near the front? That’s to push air out to the sides, making a partial vacuum underneath.

Don’t think many teams will be eager to copy Merc but you can guarantee they’re all over the photos of Perez’s floor

would love some analysis of this or the rb floor, if anyone sees something
1
u/GrogJoker May 27 '23
Wow that floor is so basic compared to the RB, now im curious about the Ferrari and Aston ones too !!

I have always wondered why the teams don't paint the floors like they do test mule cars with dazzle cammo on tracks where they know the cars have a high potential for being exposed? I know paint is weight but a few grams on low speed tracks can't hurt?
