ELIC why do we say someone who's fallen down is "head over heels" when over your heels is where your head normally is when you're standing up?

The term is actually "Head over Heals."

It means that because youve fallen, your head now needs healing

You fall head over heels in love, you fall down arse over tit.

Because when it comes to which body part they land on, they chose their head over their heels.

It’s not fall down, it’s turn down. As in “Your mom wants a new pair of shoes, so she needs to give me something in return. I’m certainly not going to turn down head over heels.”

It’s because they really like to tumble. Head over heels in love with falling down.

That's why I always preferred "ass over teakettle."

Same. Of course, I prefer ass over coffee, too.
