DAE just dread the holidays for some reason?
Idk if it has to do with my seasonal depression and where I live is always cold during Christmas but I just dread the holidays. I could be surrounded by loved ones and eating the best food but something about the holidays is lonely and depressing. I also hate Christmas music it makes my ears feel like they’re about to break. Tell me I’m not the only one plzzz

My first husband died December 19th 1996. I still have his unopened presents in my garage. The 18th and 19th are horrible. My current husband understands and helps a lot. For some reason this year was HORRIBLE. Today was ok. Husband cooked dinner friends came over. Now I’m boiling down the carcass for stew

I hope your day gets better for you.

I don't like for a number of reasons. But the current is the stores are crowded, people are so freaking rude and I feel like we are supposed to be so cheerful and love everybody but you go out and they are all rude.
Was at Costco and an employee was in the corner crying because people were so rude.
And I detest Christmas music.

For me it was New Year’s Eve, that morning my husband had a sudden heart attack while we were “kicking it into high gear” at the gym and died a short while later when we got home. It’s been twelve years now and I’m ok but those first few years weren’t that much fun.

My birthday is Christmas Eve and it makes it difficult. Christmas is already overwhelming and my seasonal depression sure doesn’t help. But having to put on a face of gratefulness, unending love for my family, and cheer is incredibly difficult. “But it’s Christmas & your birthday! All wrapped in one! Must be the best time of year!” - that expectation makes the holidays even more difficult.
I’m burnt out by it

It's so overwhelming. Christmas Eve, I have 3 stops to make after 2pm, and for all three stops, I have to bake a dessert enough for at least 20 people because I'm the only one who bakes. People's have slowly stopped bringing even store bought desserts, so I feel the need to fill the void of desserts. I then also host dinner on Christmas day. This year, I had a 7 months old to tend to, too. Needless to say, we skipped Christmas Eve this year. No regrets.

Same. I loathe holidays, even my own birthday if my family gets involved.
Anything holiday related ruins my mood, however I do have to admit that checking my phone in the morning and reading the 'merry Christmas!' messages from my friends made me feel better about it. Maybe next time I'll ask one of them to adopt me into their family for the day.

This year has been particularly hard, a lot of it related to grief/anticipatory grief/overwhelm of getting/receiving more things.
Christmas on a Wednesday also gave me insane amounts of stress this year considering it's the only day off of work we get.

Me too. I love the idea of the holidays, but I think the combination of my seasonal depression, the fact that my husband works majority of the holidays, being far away from family, and also having some difficult family relationship/dynamics.
Each year I always picture the holidays as such a beautiful thing, but once October comes around the dread creeps in.

I feel this exact way! Once Christmas and New years are over I just feel 10x better for some reason. Glad I’m not the only one

I do. For me it’s that my family consists of narcissists so the entire time everyone would act like they didn’t hate each other while also gossiping and being all around nasty.
Now even though I don’t spend holidays with my family anymore it feels awkward and even miserable at times to be at holiday functions. I feel on edge and like I need to avoid drawing any attention to myself but also like I need to be present enough to not be “weird.”
Witnessing positive family dynamics as a guest at holiday events makes me realize how dysfunctional my home was and makes me feel like I don’t belong. It’s hard and I wish I had constructive advice but it’s never really gotten better for me. Good luck and know you’re not alone in dreading the holidays.
