The way the presenter draws links between the accents and the physicality of their origins is fascinating. Thanks for sharing.

YES. This simple point has been sending my mind into a whirlwind of analyzing different accents and the terrain of their origin

Signed ...but on the topic of hearing :/

I kept wondering why they didn't just use subtitles. Eventually it got the best of me and I did a little digging to find out more, and came up with this.
https://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2008/nov/28/deaf-subtitles-sign-language-film
I suppose deaf people would be interested in knowing more about how people speak and varying accents, similar to how I'm interested to know about the difference between Canadian and European French, or Iranian and Afghani Farsi, even though I don't speak either of those languages

Is there any way to turn off the signing (like turning off CC, etc)?

u/jcahq1 Mar 13 '19
Haha what? It’s part of the actual video...?

u/shorewoody Mar 13 '19
No, there is no option, do you have another (snarky) answer?

There’s nothing snarky about that answer. The sign language is not a feature, it’s an actual part of the video. There is no turning it off.

But but but I just can't stand to even have an idea of what it's like to be def!

Or it's distracting.

But what he is asking for. Is how to turn it off. It’s not laid over the video. It’s part of it.

Non snarky is talking about why the video is about sign language more than about kings and their language. Snarky is when you just crack jokes without explaining it. I’m happy that you got the joke straight away, good for you! Talking about why the video doesn’t allow that is part of a good intelligent conversation!

u/jcahq1 Mar 13 '19
Why would there be an option? It’s not snarky to point out you were just being dumb.
1
u/shorewoody Mar 13 '19
If the point of the video was about sign language then yes, but this video purports to be about king’s and their language. I think maybe you don’t understand what snarky means, but I guess this is the internet and it’s way more important to be funny and insulting than be part of an adult conversation.

Now that reply was snarky. All I was saying is that it’s obvious the sign language is a legit part of that video. You were asking for the option to turn it off like cc. That’s not how things work. If you had asked for if there was a VERSION without the sign language. Then that would have made sense. A whole separate video. Asking how to turn it off however is just funny. It’s not laid over the top, like cc. That’s why I’m laughing at you for getting confused.

Edwardians refers to people of the Edwardian people, Victorians, of the Victorian period, not the royals themselves.

No, it's increasingly common on British TV for programmes to have a second airing with integrated signing and this is a recording of one of those.
It could be worse, there's plenty of unique programmes only in Gaelic or Welsh. :/

If you liked this go see "They Shall not Grow Old". Limited viewings but you may find it a a big box theater.
