I have not long rewatched it and the parallels in episode 1 to the current state of the US is scary.

"My Best Fiend" (1999)

If you are interested in film (and even if you're not), this is a fascinating look at the collaboration of the great German director Werner Herzog and the explosive actor Klaus Kinski. Herzog is endlessly quotable and insightful, and both figures are intense forces of nature in terms of their personalities, and when you throw them together in very difficult film shoots (esp. 'Aguirre' and 'Fitzcarraldo'), the sparks fly!

Been wanting to watch this movie since I saw Aguirre and the burden of dreams which is also a great documentary. Kinski seemed like a real monster to have to work with or interact with in any way (look up his accusations from his daughter if you want proof of how horrible he was), but no doubt he played in important role in shaping Herzog's career.

American Socialist: The Life and Times of Eugene Victor Debs.

“Bernie Sanders inspired a generation - but who inspired him? This is the passionate, thoughtful biography of the founder of the American Socialist Party, five-time presidential candidate and the only presidential candidate in US history to be imprisoned for his campaign platform. The values with which lived his life and fought for social and economic justice remain in short supply today.”

I watched on the Kanopy app through my local library.

If you can find it: American Dream (1980) by Barbara Kopple. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099028/)

I saw it many years ago and it still sticks with me. It covers a labor movement during the 70s. The realism brings so much clarity. I don’t want to say too much, but if you can find it, see it.

Edit: looks like it a free to stream on archive: https://archive.org/details/americandream_201908

Call me Lucky

About the life of comedian/activist Barry Crimmer. Someone I had never heard of, but every single comedian they interview in the documentary knows him.

A little dark, but I really enjoyed it. Directed by bobcat goldthwait (a friend of Crimmer)

The Elephant 6 Recording company. It’s about the Elephant 6 label/collective/scene

So if you like any of the Elephant 6 bands like Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples In Stereo, etc it’s a must watch

Super fun and cool, makes you (me) wish you lived in Athens, GA in the 90s and got to see all those bands playing gigs and house shows, or even made music with them!
