Plumbing Can I turn my heating on?

Post image

I have removed a radiator from this wall but have not added caps to the ends. Is it okay to turn the heating on in the house or will I need to keep it off until I have capped these ends

Couple glasses of red wine, soft lighting, maybe a kiss on the neck, sure.

IF.IF the valves are off and holding then yes. Did you drain it first ? If not then you know they are probably holding. I’d cap but then that’s caution.

Going to cap them tomorrow just wondering if it’s fine to have heating on tonight until I get the caps?

If the valves are fine tonight then why cap them 🤷

Is another radiator going there eventually?

If the lock shield and the TRV are holding the pressure then yes.

I'd put some buckets under them just incase though.

The problem is TRVs don’t normally have a fully off setting. It may leak if too cold, heating the pipes might help to avoid that but seems risky to have done this without any caps for the pipes or a decorators cap to replace the TRV head.

Yes you can turn it on. At the minimum you want the TRV end capped ASAP though.

Bucket and towel at the ready. I would as I don’t like being cold. Your call of course.

I always put some blanking nuts on for peace of mind. They’re peanuts from Screwfix and the kind. Just incase a valve goes dodgey!

TVR or thermostatic radiator valves will either have a zero position or a frost icon. Those with the snowflake will not fully stop the water as they are designed to constantly flow incase of frost. If your TVR has the frost setting then you will need the stop or decorators cap to fully stop the flow of water.

People love to mess with things like this tell other people in your house not to touch them! Else kids will have a play and not be able to turn them off! I know from experience both as being a kid and a plumber

TRV usually leaks without a cap when the heating comes on. It's not much put a bucket under it, if you have to have the heating on.
