Boiler advice

I’ve noticed a high pitch whistling from my boiler a couple of times over the last few months. Each time it has been while the heating is on but it’s definitely not everytime the heating is on as we have it on a few times a day and we’ve only heard it a handful of times over the last few months.

I haven’t had a service since we bought the house 2 years ago. Would you say book in for a service or a repair? Thanks

Which boiler makes a high pitched whistling sound could be a quiz question and most heating installers would get the answer

Probably worth checking if it’s under warranty still and if you can reinstate it for cheaper than the service and parts probably needed. Very common issue on Ideals… could be dirt in gas valve, dodgy burner. Wank boilers in my view tbf

We didn’t get any paperwork for the boiler when we moved in so I don’t think I have anyway of checking that

You can call the boiler manufacturer to check it

Yep it is an ideal 😭 (says espirit eco). Previous owner rented out the house and I have no doubt it’s a cheap boiler

Hi mate

If it’s a ideal that’s not ideal far from the best boilers not the worst but still on the crappier sides in my opinion

I would have someone come out to at least do a service for you and if they are able to find the fault at the same time great

Avoid British Gas and ever warm if you are in Scotland am reed or wrb are very good options

Thanks very much for your reply. Why avoid British Gas? Thank you

I work with a lot of former British Gas employees there contracts got changed and a lot of there experienced and well working guys left

They are very much all about cost

The workmasnship and care has gone down hill and apparently there after support is shocking

Gas valve needs replacing or the injector is dirty. Common for them to do it at high fire so turning the boiler down can prevent it if it’s annoying you whilst you wait for an engineer. Not always the case mind.

The Ideal Espirit Eco is one of their budget boilers which gets rebadged as quite a few names. I’ve fitted loads, they aren’t a bad boiler, gas valve and leaky pressure relief are the main problems. People will have a bad experience and tell you they’re crap. I can give you repair stories for loads of boilers.

They have a five year warranty so if you’re in warranty ring Ideal. If you’re ringing an engineer you need to tell them you want it serviced but it also needs a repair it will most likely save you money.
