Reminds me of a horrorifying scene in Discworld where a witch turned a wizard into a frog.

But frogs are so very small, and humans are so big, so where does all the extra mass go?

Well the witch put it into a pink balloon, and the baloon started leaking….

It was bad.

That reminds me of Animorphs, when they started asking Ax about where the extra mass went when they morphed something small, and got told it was stored in hyperspace and the odds of it getting disintegrated by a ship going through hyperspace was just really really small...

And then in book 18, they turn into mosquitoes in order to steal a Secret Service member's DNA, and something really really unlikely happens...

Which book is that?

"A Hat Fill of Sky", the second book in the Tiffany Aching sub-series.

I think Hat Full of Sky. When Tiffany/the Hiver turned the shop owner of a magic shop into a frog when on her rampage.

I mean, in this case the extra mass goes to the beyond. Like, there are few consistent elements in portrayal of things from beyond, but the idea that our universe is not a closed system to them is a pretty fundamental one. When you stick your hand in a pond, you are violating conservation of mass in the pond, surprising nobody but the fish.

Lt. Odo (RIP, Rene Auberjonois)

u/noonaneomuyeppiyeppi 23h ago

I'm glad someone else thought of him!

u/NoNeuronNellie 23h ago

I know it was mostly for budget reasons, but the idea of a shape shifter who preferred to stay in his "original" form is quite intriguing

u/ScaredyNon Trans-Inclusionary Radical Misogynist 19h ago

I mean, don't most main cast shapeshifters in fictional media stay humanoid because it's easier to relate with both for the audience and the other characters? He's certainly not picking up any more alien hoes as a boulder or anything

3

u/NoNeuronNellie 3h ago

Maybe, but Odo specifically prefers his humanoid form to anything else because he hates change and chaos. He'll turn into a bird or a lamp in order to catch the bad guy, but his whole thing is about order and stability. I'll put it this way, he could have been anything in the world and chose to be a cop

u/pepsicoketasty 23h ago

Oh the extra mass gets send to zero space.

Now if a ship traveling through it hits it. Shit happens..

u/TransLunarTrekkie 22h ago

Then you have to say "it's animorphin time!" and animorph all over the place.

Immediately thought of Kandra from Mistborn lmao. “Do you have ANY idea how hard hair is? It took me CENTURIES to get this right AND YOU WILL APPRECIATE THAT FACT.”

reminds me of firestorm, dc hero who can manipulate matter but requires a talking stephen hawking in his mind to constantly help him with his chemistry (but sometimes they write that out or just give him fire powers)

Odd choice.

Dragons are known to shapeshift, yes. Checks out.

1

u/ShadoW_StW 14h ago

Every time I see low-context superpower discussion I need to have clarfications on what "shapeshifting" means because it's one of the most commonly-used terms that can mean such large number of things. I probably should get a "creepy vs wet" style chart for it to post and ask people to point into the column "shapeshifting" means this time.

u/Valiant_tank 13h ago

Ah yes, Odo DS9. Also everyone's favorite fascist collaborator cop.

I would have the perfect opportunity to get obliterated by a God for being a smartass, since I speak Hungarian.
