Celebrity Chismis Filipino Dramas are very popular in American Samoa
Share ko lang kasi sobrang natutuwa ako. I had a Samoan patient last night (I work as a US-based RN) and grabe, addicted pala sila sa mga Flipino teleseryes. Nanonood sya kagabi ng A Love To Last, tapos ang dami nyang kwento about Pinoy dramas.

Royal Blood and Can't Buy Me Love are airing sa Nigeria ngayon. Naka english dub. Surprisingly, sikat ang He's Into Her at other teen age drama sa Cambodia and Indonesia.

Funny thing is that we Filipinos think our teleseryes are trash and would rather watch foreign shows.

To be fair, mga magaganda at well love shows ang mga iniimport ng GMA at ABSCBN so of course hindi kasama yung paulit-ulit na kabitan at violence (w/o plot) sa mga iniimport or iniimport nga paisa-isa lang at hindi madalas na halos sa Isang taon 2-4 na shows with same plot depende pa kung medyo mataas yung rating eh hahabaan pa yan ng mga producers kahit visible naman from socmed yung mga bashing ng tao

In Kenya too, may rivaly din sila don ng idols nila Kim/Maja pinagbabardahan din nila 😆. I stumbled upon a Kenya Fb page na 90% Pinoy shows ang content. Mga old series ng dos, Pangako Sayo etc. Read th commebts lumaki din sima sa mga Pinoy series, nostalgic din sa kanila makakita ng old series like bata pa lang sila inaabangan talaga nila, nagmamadali umuwi from school para sa Pinoy telenovela. 😊 Cute lang. Malaking bagay din ang socmeds, accessible na mga celebs for people around the world.

u/exhaustedlittlething 1d ago
Parang nga. Haha! May Kenyan friend ako, pero she moved to the US 10 years ago. Sabi nya before she left, she used to watch Ina and Angelo. Haha

u/AlterSelfie 1d ago
Agree! May around 10M followers yun page and pag nakita mo mga posts, puros tungkol sa series ng Abs-cbn particularly nila Kim, Maja, and Kathryn. Updated nga din sila sa showbiz. As in, nag-uusap usap in English ng mga ganap ng artista, mapa-separation at pag-ship.

u/joniewait4me 1d ago
Ang daming Kenyan or African people na nalungkot sa KimXi break up 😆.

u/Joseph20102011 1d ago
Fun fact: Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa are very popular in Ecuador because of "Pangako Sa Iyo" and "Dahil May Isang Ikaw".

Vietnam too! When we switched on the hostel tv (maybe 2019 or 2020).. lo and behold a vietnamese dubbed sir chief and maya (be careful with my heart) on prime time viet tv 😁

u/KnownTie8588 1d ago
Super sikat nila Kathryn at ni *he who shall not be named sa Vietnam.

Char hahaha

u/RuleCharming4645 4h ago
To be fair, we are already a soft power nation when it comes to entertainment to African nations, our SEA neighbors and Pacific islands neighbors however during pandemic yata bumagsak yung kalidad ng tv shows, the producers are Sh!t (case in point Pulang Araw and AKNP), palakasan nalang ng hype and different shows with same plots also naging malumay yung pagimport ng films when the Korean Wave spread plus lack of support from the government and lack of strategy of importing our shows especially we had chance to import more shows not just in Africa continent, our SEA neighbors and Pacific islands neighbors but also Eastern Europe and Latin Americans not only that our film industry also need to export films if GMA and ABSCBN can buy rights to release a foreign movie in their channel, they can also sell rights to other countries to and to their network channels to show Filipino films that way we can penetrate in foreign awards and get clout that Filipino films deserve

u/electrique07 1h ago

Hahaha

u/-And-Peggy- 1d ago
Ito kita ko na! Kenyan pala haha here yung page, mukhang updated naman sila sa shows hahaha nakita ko nagpost sila about Widows' War eh
7
u/Swimming_Childhood81 1d ago
Sa totoo lang, the way she talked about Pinoy dramas, masasabi mo talagang nakaka proud as a Pinoy.

They find our shows relatable and they find that filipino values are close to their own. Same sa Africans. Ang maganda rin daw sa pinoy seryes and movies (per Africans I've met) is you pwede sya panoorin with the kids around unlike the western ones.
1
u/RuleCharming4645 4h ago
I think so too aside sa well medyo hindi pa masyado established yung entertainment industry ng mga Africans na nakapanood ng Filipino films, they had same values as we Filipinos have especially in family and how you treat your elders and religion unlike sa western na individualistic at different approach when it comes to family values, treating elders and religion

u/creamdae 1d ago

u/CantThinkAnyUserName 1d ago
Last year nasa cambodia kami, pagbukas namin ng tv, “ang probinsyano”, tapos yung dubbing ang weird kasi isang boses lang.

u/trippinxt 1d ago edited 13h ago

u/cassiopeiaxxix 1d ago

Yung mga Pinoy teleserye sikat din sa ibang SEA countries and even in Africa.

u/Calm-Helicopter3540 1d ago
our dramas have the highest potential to be hit overseas tbh, just like what happened to kdramas (which eventually helped boost the hallyu wave globally). with government’s support, naging sobrang laki ng kdrama industry and naging sikat globally. i hope our govt would also step up to support our entertainment industry kasi it will help us naman in terms of tourism and such. eh kaso wala, mukhang wala silang pake sa ganyan, abs-cbn nga pina-shutdown e lol

u/exhaustedlittlething 1d ago
4
u/InfernalQueen 19h ago

u/Complex_Midnight_671 19h ago
This is so true! I had a lot Samoan workmates before, and they love Filipino movies and teleseryes. Even when it comes to food, their palate is almost the same as ours, as well as their values and culture. They’re very big and almost gigantic in size but they’re such nice people, and they totally get our humor! Haha 🥹

u/Radiant-Somewhere189 1d ago
Wooow naka proud naman 🫶 btw! Ano ba ang samoans? Hahaha sorry tamad na mag search
26
u/exhaustedlittlething 1d ago
People from Samoan Islands… Pacific Islanders. Kaya nga, while majority ata sa Pinas addicted to K-Dramas, kakatuwa na ganoong level pala ang Filipino dramas to other countries.

u/Radiant-Somewhere189 1d ago
Ayun!

u/louderthanbxmbs 1d ago
Ang alam ko sa Cambodia and Vietnam din sikat yung ibang shows natin especially Marian Rivera ones

Oh yeah, one of my close friends at my work place is from Tonga, he said he watched Marimar as a kid nagulat ako 😭

Comments here makes me sad tbh. Philippines has a potential to be a global media juggernaut, but the inept and corrupt politicians and honchos here are sadly hindering us. Not the case in South Korea for example.

u/Apprehensive_Ad_6999 20h ago
Totoo to. I lived in American Samoa for 7 years. They loved Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales.

u/Accomplished-Exit-58 18h ago

Not just Samoa, but almost all Pacific Islands! Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, even NZ! They even cook pinoy food at home! My Kiwi neighbours are more updated sa pinoy showbiz kesa sakin.
Love these people! Typically 6'5, tribal tattoos, appearing like Rock or Jason Momoa, pero laging well mannered and gentle. Nung naka sagi ako kinabahan ako kasi hanggang dibdib lang ako and biceps bigger than my head, siya pa nag "are you alright brother?"
