First time watching.
I just started and am in the early part of season 1. I figured this would be right up my alley, since I love shows like The Mentalist, Chuck, and Pysch. I'm enjoying it so far, but am wondering if it gets an overarching storyline, like Red John. I know I'll bore quickly if it stays a formulaic procedural. I don't mind 1 off episodes, if there's a baddie that they can't catch, or an organization they need to take down.

There are a couple of storylines with Kate's mother's story arc and 3XK.

Let's just say that the convos about Beckett's mom murder aren't just idle talk. The story arc starts basically in the last episode of season 1.
Another arc is due for later on in season 3.
Season 8 has another self-contained arc
Then there will be the two-parter episodes telling a bit more elaborate stories. Start in season 2, once per season.
... That not to mention the arc spanning each and every episode - Castle and Beckett romance. :)

There are few story arcs but I don't think to level of some of the others. Still a really good show

I'm enjoying it. I was just hoping the will they won't they between Beckett and Castle wasn't the only continuing storyline. Red John from Mentalist or Samaritan from Person of Interest are probably the most well executed overarching storylines I've seen. It doesn't have to be to that level, but a serial killer or clandestine organization would break up the monotony.

Has both plus some others. Most are not focus of a season but some are majority of a season while lots of smaller plots span multiple episodes sometimes season or two apart

That, plus how likable the characters are, will definitely be enough to keep my interest. Thank you.

Oh yes, there are several overarching story lines throughout the series..
