I remember we went to Ireland a few years ago. Everyone we spoke to lived around NYC for a time. They all said the economy was bad so they came to the US, overstayed their visas and worked as servers and bartenders. That was mind-blowing that literally dozens or Irish people all did the same thing.
They didn't go there for the economy, Irish people can move anywhere in the EU and the Irish economy with its 12.7 euro/h minimum wage is definitely not bad enough that you would rather be an illegal immigrant without any pension/health insurance.
They left because of the Hollywood image of the US, LA and NYC, living like the shows.
Indeed. People would rather meme than understand why these people end up voting the way they do. 90% of what Trump says are lies, but he’s building off the 10% of real problems that exist in the country, such as broken immigration.
There’s a difference between illegal and illegal immigration. However, what faith do you have the MAGA crowd wouldn’t eventually use the vast infrastructure needed to detain the undocumented to detain US citizens?
Trump is running a campaign on straight vengeance. He’s been urged to use the Insurrection Act to quell protests in Project 2025. He wanted to do so during BLM protests but was restrained. That restraint won’t be there and it’s not clear the courts can or will provide protection.
Yeah, this Reddit place is a political brainwashing tool. They post a brown person and say she's against all immigration. Really, they're no better than their adversaries.
As a legal immigrant, I certainly don't hate illegal immigrants. In fact, I have frequently pointed out the hypocrisy of the "bad hombre" tropes that Trump started. I just happen to be conscious of the fact that there need to be limits to how many immigrants the US can admit, and what the process to admit them needs to be. I have only respect for migrants at the border who are merely trying to find a better future, but on the same note admit that there are limits to what the US can do about them. I will admit to disrespecting illegal immigrants who are visa overstays in the US. They clearly had enough means to secure an initial visa to the US, and subsequently decided to game the system.
Someone who wouldn’t have ID when they illegally cross the border, is gonna also not have ID when they apply for housing/work/services. People ask for IDs all the time for benign shit.
Maybe it works differently in the US (doubt it) but normally if you legally migrate somewhere you'll be provided with documents proving your migrant status like a residence permit.
They literally can’t tell, I get told to go back to my country several times a year (it’s getting worse) and my people came from Texas (which I guess was Mexico until one day it wasn’t)— nobody in my family ever immigrated here but I’m still supposed to “go back” to my country. People can’t tell the difference and they likely don’t know enough about American history to be able to make appropriate judgments on who’s “allowed” to be here or not

Legal immigrant vs illegal immigrants. No one hates illegal immigrants more than legal immigrants.
