ASK THE SUB Everyday sneakers / trainers? Brands with no ties to Israel?

I’ve concluded that - Nike - Adidas - new balance - puma - Veja

Are brands I don’t want to support anymore.

But I’m in desperate need of new everyday sneakers (that also goes with most outfits).

Is there a brand with 0 ties to Israel that anyone can recommend ?

I live in Europe

ASK THE SUB Is Pepsi on BDS boycott list?

I know Pepsi is on some boycott lists but I am asking about the official BDS list. I only strictly follow the BDS list.

I am even a bit confused about the state of Coca-Cola as well, I know BDS recently posted about boycotting them but it's still not listed on the official list.

I drink a lot of sugar-free/calorie-free drinks to help with my weight loss, they are very helpful but if I want to stop using both Pepsi and Coke there are pretty much no sugar-free drinks available since tons of other drink brands are products of these two companies.

I know there are some Palestinian coke drinks these days but they are simply not available here.

I really care about following BDS and want to make sure I am following it correctly.

ASK THE SUB Got a Starbucks e gift card from a family member. Trying to figure out what- if anything- I can do with it.

Starbucks already has the money, and as far as I can tell (after trying to research it), I can’t get the money out of it and into something else because I’m not the original sender, and I don’t have a gift receipt. (Unless I’m missing something?) I feel bad for a few reasons here, but I’m just trying to figure out if there’s anything beneficial I can do so it’s not a complete waste. It being electronic may limit what I can do. Any suggestions and input are appreciated.

ASK THE SUB Posted for Palestine and now shadowbanned... can anyone help?

Hi everyone, I hope this post is allowed.

I posted about Palestine from my small business social media accounts. I was prepared to lose followers, and I did lose quite a few. That's fine.

What I didn't anticipate is that Meta would completely restrict all my posts moving forward even on other topics. I have 2K followers and now my posts are seen by about 4 people each.

Would anyone be willing to help by visiting my pages and leaving positive reactions?

I purposely didn't share the links in this post b/c I don't want this to look like self-promotion. But if anyone would be willing to help please let me know. It's a health coaching business where I normally talk about health related topics.

Thanks!

ASK THE SUB Athletic Apparel Brands?

Hey guys! I'm a pretty active person and it's about time I buy some new stuff. Can anyone give me recommendations for brands to look into? To the best of my knowledge, the following are not an option:

  1. Nike (Involved with Uyghur forced labor camps in China)
  2. Adidas (Used to sponsor Israeli Football, was also involved with Uyghur forced labor camps in China)
  3. Puma (Currently sponsoring Israeli Football after Adidas stopped, but announced they'll stop "sometime in 2024" - no specific date given)
  4. Reebok (Has been verbal about their Pro-Israel stance, also sponsored Israeli Olympic Team)
  5. Under Armour (Supply chain includes Israeli companies, also just opened up 15 new stores in Israel)
  6. New Balance (Sponsored Israeli marathons and sporting events)

My ideal choice would be to purchase from brands that have taken a Pro Palestine stance or a stance against Israel and condemned their actions. However, due to a lack of such brands, I'm also okay with purchasing from brands that are neutral.

Note: While I'd like to know about brands that I can purchase from, please also feel free to let me know which other brands to avoid (and also why)

ASK THE SUB Are VPN providers supporting Israel by having it available as a location?

I imagine having Israel on the list of a VPN provider's available locations means they are also supporting Israel, since I imagine it would require them to buy and own Israeli servers, and/or possibly even have Israel based employees. Maybe I'm wrong and that isn't how it works though? I'm not super knowledgeable on how VPNs work. If someone could explain for me, I would very much appreciate it, and if this is indeed how it works, I would like to ask if anyone knows of a VPN provider that doesn't offer Israel as an available location?

ASK THE SUB Have any popular YouTubers shown either support for Palestine or made a statement?

I ask because I think it’s just as bad to be silent on the genocide as it is to be complicit. Especially at this point, 9 months in when they’ve had nearly a year to educate themselves. I unfollowed some of my favorite YouTube creators like Fundie Fridays, and Plumbella because I couldn’t stand how chipper and ignorant of a genocide they were, pretending like nothing was happening and refusing to even acknowledge it (In Fundie Fridays case, they kept hinting at it but refused to make a statement/take a stance, or do literally anything to show solidarity). It just doesn’t sit right with me, but I’ve gotten over them and moved on.

However, with huge creators like Jacksepticeye or Markiplier, I’m unaware if either of them have said anything about Palestine. I recently rewatched a gameplay from Jacksepticeye but it felt like watching something from pre-2020 with how easy going and uninvolved he was. It was just gaming and talking about himself. I scrolled through his videos and couldn’t find a single thing that looked like a statement of solidarity, nothing written in his bio, just nothing at all except himself. I didn’t check Markiplier bc it kind of made my heart sink to think that even an Irish person like Jacksepticeye who comes from a country that so openly supports Palestine, still wouldn’t do a thing to help. And he has such an enormous amount of influence, too. I can’t believe I really liked these people as a kid, it’s silly but it really made me upset.

Even some channels that are within the genre of that topic, such as people who talk about fundies and Christian mega churches, and therefore Christian Zionism, won’t make a statement or do anything more. There was one channel I loved and after leaving multiple comments asking why he didn’t say anything when it already had a lot to do with what he already made videos on, he finally made a quick statement. He made one video talking about the conflict and said he was ashamed of himself for waiting for so long to address the situation, and then… that was it. He mentions it briefly here or there every few videos, but that’s the most he’ll do. He doesn’t donate to Palestinian charities, doesn’t fundraise for them, he does NOTHING. And that’s a pro-Palestine creator.

Why does it seem like YouTube in particular is filled with such fake, self-centered people? Are there any bigger channels at all, even just one, that openly supports Palestine or promotes BDS, or even just does fundraisers for Palestine?? Because honestly the longer people are silent, the more I completely lose faith in humanity.

ASK THE SUB Is buying Cola once okay if it’s for a good reason?

So I’ve been hard boycotting for a while now to where it’s just a part of my life. When I get groceries, checking the No Thanks app is a ritual for every single item I buy. I know Cola is on the list and a brand that has connections to “Israel” but yesterday I bought one.

I was on my lunch from a new job and walked to the nearby dollar store. There was a houseless man sitting on the curb outside the shop and he looked really unwell. When I walked by he looked up and asked “Could you buy me a cold soda? Please?” And the thing is, we’re on the brink of a heat wave, the man had every reason to want a cold drink, so I said “If my card works, absolutely.” I’m not going to say no to someone asking for help when it comes to food to drink or anything like that.

So I went inside and grabbed a water for myself and looked in the refrigerated drinks area near the registers and it was only cola products in all of them. I felt bad and stood there for a second but there was no way I could go back out without a cold drink for him, he looked overheated, dehydrated, and exhausted. So I grabbed a cola and for the first time in however long I can’t remember, I bought it. Went out and gave it to him but I can’t stop thinking about it.

What’s done is done, but do you think that was okay? I really can’t stop thinking about it, I’m trying so hard to do everything I can to support the cause but that felt like a big slip up and I didn’t know what else to do. I feel like helping people in need is part of the actions we need to take to help bring in the new world we’re trying to create, but idk how much that means anything if I did it using a product that’s actively helping along a genocide. :/

Edit: a commenter was complaining that I said Cola was a targeted brand so I changed the wording.

ASK THE SUB Do I have to boycott 100% of the time even in cases where it would be financially better for me not to

I’ve been trying my best boycotting for the past year. I have not gone to a single fast food restaurant on the boycott list since last years October. I also have been doing my best to avoid any products on the boycott list, with only some slip ups here and there because of ignorance or poor mental health (which obviously resulted in some guilt afterwards). My question is, is it ok for me to say, buy a 4 can pack of monster energy if it’s on a 50% off sale? I’m a student and I always prioritize buying things on sale anyways but there are occasional times here and there where I go “damn, I wish I could’ve bought that pack of monster instead I could really use the 7 bucks I could’ve saved”. I understand energy drinks are not a “necessity” and of course human lives matter more than that… but this is an example that could go to anything else including other products. I’m just wondering what other people think. Thanks in advance.

ASK THE SUB Question regarding boycotting

So ever since I've heard about the BDS boycott from last year I have been boycotting all brands like Domino's, McDonald's, KFC and all the other companies on the website. Recently someone told me that we actually do not have to boycott Domino's/McDonald's because what happened was that an Israeli Jew who owned a franchise in Israel gave free food to the IDF and that the main owners/CEOs of the company in the US were unaware of this and did not endorse it. And so I was told that we do not actually have to boycott McDonald's or Domino's because it was basically only the owner of the franchise in Israel that was responsible for giving free food to the IDF and we cannot blame the whole company for this one decision as they themselves did not order for this to be done and I was also told that it is not fair since franchise owners in Muslim countries are also losing out on money when they don't have anything to do with it for example a franchisee in the UAE would be losing out money from having a dominos franchise and instead of our boycotts being intended to target the main parent company, we are also causing a loss to franchise owners. I would just like to ask if this is true and if anyone would kindly be able to provide sources to refute or support what I have been told. (About the main companies being unaware of the donations of free food to the IDF and so how it is unfair to boycott them as they did not directly give out those order and that by boycotting we are also causing franchisees in Muslim countries to lose money when they don't have anything to do with it.) Thanks.

ASK THE SUB Boycott Marks and Spencers?

Apparently there are no active calls to boycott Marks and Spencers. I know the store has a historical link with zionism and Israel but I read online that the company had begun distancing itself from the whole situation in the 2010s. Is it alright to shop there? Or is it definitely a place to boycott?

ASK THE SUB Is it effective to boycott a campus branch of Starbucks?

Hello everyone, I wasn’t aware that Starbucks was a company to boycott until about an hour ago, so I was wondering about the logistics of boycotting a Starbucks branch that is located on a college campus and is part of a college meal program. For context, you can use real money at this Starbucks, but most use a special kind of currency called flex dollars that is included as part of your meal plan.

My question is whether boycotting this Starbucks would be effective or not, since I’m not sure if it works the same as non-campus branches of Starbucks where the profits are obviously going to corporate. Part of the reason why I’m reluctant is because a large percentage of the workers at this Starbucks are members of the larger city community (i.e. not students who could easily find another job) and I don’t think they deserve to be harmed because of actions they weren’t complicit in.

ASK THE SUB How's your boycott journey going?

Hi everyone,

Its been over a year of atrocities and still on going. For some of us our boycott journey started years ago and for other its much more recent. Either way the journey continues.

I was curious about how the experience has been for everyone and what are areas of improvements, so I made two surveys that I would greatly appreciate if you could fill.

The first is a general survey for all:
Survey 1: General survey

The second is in addition to the first:
Survey 2: for those who use/have used disoccupied

Note/disclaimer: I am one of the volunteers that's been working with disoccupied since early on, however this is my personal initiative.
