META PSA - Walmart is having a Car seat Trade-in event, about to throw out your old car seat? Exchange it for a $30 Walmart GC instead.

Walmart is having a Car seat Trade-in event, about to throw out your old car seat your child has outgrown? Exchange it for a $30 Walmart GC instead.

More information on the event along with how to find which local stores near you are participating can be found on the Walmart event page.

I looked at the info page, it does state it is for Car seats only they will not let you bring in booster seats. Limit of 2 car seat trade in's per household. The car seat needs to be taken to the customer service desk where you will let them know you are there for the trade in event.

This event is from 9/16/2019 TO 9/30/2019

Edit:

Here is a page with more specific info such as the no boosters/2 per household info I listed above, and Here is another page with more info on the Walmart/TerraCycle partnership.

Also Here is a list of various places to get free things for your babies (formula cans, wipe samples, travel sized lotions, shampoos, etc) and freebies for young kids.

META How to set up an Amazon Wishlist?

Okay, so I know how to set up a wishlist, but I didn't know if there were specific rules for this subreddit and whenever I clicked on the link on "how to set up an Amazon Wishlist" in the subreddit rules it says I have to be a moderator to view the page. It said that on mobile, but I don't know if it'll do the same thing on the desktop version. Could someone point me in the right direction please? I'm trying to make a post about needing assistance.

META If you get a message about a discord for paypal transfers

It’s a scam! I didn’t understand what it was at first and joined the discord as the user had messaged me regarding helping me with my request. He’s literally trying to scam already broke desperate people. Luckily I was able to ask my fiancé about it and he immediately recognized it as a scam. They’re offering PayPal transfers (from hacked accounts?) for Bitcoin. It’s fake.

Edit: And of course there’s yet another scammer. The only people who’ve even contacted me are scammers. This one is asking how much you need and what you need. Then offers to give you even more (aka I needed $40 they said well I’m sure you can use extra funds so I’ll give you $150). Then ask if you have a bank account and then what your mobile deposit limit is. Another check scam most likely..

If you’re a scammer stop trying I will not fall for it. I’m not sure if they’re coming from this post or my actual request post now but just stop. Y’all are just wasting your time trying to scam me and ruining my day getting my hopes up over and over again. Just stop.

I think it’s time I get off Reddit.

META Givers - What types of requests are you most likely to donate towards? What types of requests are you least likely to donate towards?

I'll start - I'm most likely to respond to smaller requests that save a person from getting further in the hole and requests from college students that just need a little temporary boost. I can almost guarantee I will never donate to people who ask for video games, expensive electronics, student loans, mortgages, travel overseas (even if it's an educational trip) or to help them help others in some vague, general way. Bonus points if it's someone who hasn't requested assistance before and bonus points if they post some proof of their situation (I have in mind that super cool lady who was tutoring/housing HS football players).

Edit - I forgot to mention some of my pet peeves. Campaigns that invoke the "if everyone gave me x amount . . ." or "if the potato salad guy could get $ . . ." Yes, if everyone in the world gave me a $1, I'd be a billionaire. And that potato salad guy provided a creative, whimsical idea that resulted in a fluke success. There've been thousands of failed campaigns "worthier" than yours before yours and there'll be thousands after. No one is entitled to a campaign that's fulfilled by strangers.

META In response to the recent post in r/subredditdrama: To those of you who like the truth about why r/food_pantry shut down. Hear it straight from the administrators

A recent post here claimed that /u/sueolsen was responsible for shutting down r/food_pantry. I was away on vacation and did not get a chance to properly address it.

The truth: Uttered bull crap

I did some inquiring to find proof since I was not associated with it but here is what the administration said:

[A] to /r/Assistance/ sent 5 hours ago

Wanted to reach out and see if things have calmed down a bit. Since there seems to be some confusion, the head moderator at food_pantry demodded the others and shut the subreddit down. He or she sent the following modmail, which nobody saw since they were all demodded a few minutes later:

Hi guys. It is with a hollow heart that I wish to announce that I will be closing /r/food_pantry down for good. The last 4 years has been one hell of an adventure. There have been so many people helped through this subreddit, but I can't in good conscience, sit around and wait for it to be corrupted by the admins. I watched /u/kickme444 [+1] grow an amazing community only for reddit to hijack it and turn it into the monstrosity it is now. What was once a wonderful community about giving to others within the community has turned into a circle jerk about bringing in money through the Reddit marketplace or promoting reddit through the world records. And it's not just redditgifts, reddit is not the site it was 4 years ago when I created this sub. All the censoring and shadiness... I would rather remember the sub that I created while it's still what I created, than what it could be if the admins decide to wedge their grubby hands on it and find some way of squeezing money out of her, while squeezing us out. I appreciate you all so much. I will forever look back on this time fondly <3 I hope you all understand my decision.

The TL;DR is that there isn't any indication that you or anyone else had anything undue going on. The other mods there are probably just confused since all they know is they got demodded and the sub got closed.

The truth is Sue was tired of the people getting bashed there so she quit as a mod. That was the end of her association there. The subreddit closed months later, long after her association with it. She had nothing to do with it.

I am here to field your questions as long as they are done in a civil manner. We are tired of the drama but felt you deserved to know the truth and for Sue be exonerated.

META PSA- BE VIGILANT

Some asshole tried to scam me yesterday morning after seeing my posts here. That person is banned now, but it's like a hydra- nuke one scammer, two more grow in its place.

Do NOT give anyone your banking information, no matter how desperate you are, no matter what. There is no instance on God's green earth that requires one to give banking login info. If someone asks for this, it's a scam.

Do not mobile deposit anything someone sends you, especially cashier's checks. They are easily faked and if an offer comes with a request to send money back, IT'S A SCAM.

I hate to mention it but PayPal can also be involved in scams, as people will send money from a stolen account, have the recipient route most if it to the scammer, and when the original owner gets their PP back and (rightly) disputes the charges, guess who is responsible?

I can't say it enough- if a plan involves receiving money for and the sender is asking you to send a portion to another person through different means, run, don't walk, it's a scam!

People that prey on the desperate are scum, be safe out there.

I went to give someone a ride to the store, I was going out anyway, and they don't have a car so it's no biggie... On the way back, I missed his street and took the next one, I saw cones in the road and someone was flagging me to go through this parking lot, it was a food bank lol! Next thing I know, a dozen people are loading my car up with food because I took the wrong turn lol. If you're struggling for food please seek out your nearest food bank. Such lovely people. I even was able to give some to my neighbor with three kids. I've been trying to go for weeks to my local one and just haven't been able to. This was an amazing turn of events.

META Reminder: Use Smile.Amazon.com to help out your favorite local struggling charity!

Ordering through Amazon is happening a lot lately so I wanted to remind you of Smile.Amazon.com 💜 It allows you to select any charity (local or global) that you'd like to contribute too!

Here is some info on it via Amazon:

AmazonSmile is a program that donates 0.5% of your eligible purchases on Amazon to a charity of your choice. All you need to do is start your shopping at smile.amazon.com. The donation will be made at no extra cost to you and you can choose from nearly one million public charitable organizations.

So it allows you a great way to shop, help out those in need on here AND help out a struggling organization. 0.5% might not seem like a lot but it does add up! I personally currently have my favorite non-profit zoo to help the animals.

Edit: If you'd like for the non-profit you work for to be considered as a option for users to select which picking out a charity on Smile.Amazon please leave a comment below with a little bit of information on the non-profit along with the name of it.

META [Meta] Can anyone tell me what happened to /r/Food_Pantry?

I received help from /r/Food_Pantry twice. I was really looking forward to repaying some of that generosity this month when money from my new writing gig comes in. The sub is now private with a notice saying that it is closed indefinitely.

It is with a hollow heart that I have closed /r/food_pantry. The last 4 years has been one hell of an adventure. There have been so many people helped through this subreddit, but please redirect your assistance needs to: /r/Random_Acts_Of_Pizza /r/assistance or search for food pantries in your area I appreciate you all so much. I will forever look back on this time fondly <3 So long, and thanks for all the fish <3

I am honestly devastated that such a great community is gone before I had the chance to contribute to it.

Does anyone know what happened or whether it may come back?

EDIT: /r/Food_Bank is up. Let's go. Thanks all.

I've been reading the posts and holy cow, there are a lot of good people here. Thank you for the reminder that there's still a lot of good even in really crappy times. META Please let us know when our Amazon thingies get there (not "Thanks", just "Got here").Is that really too much to ask?

I don't give a flip about thanks but if it didn't get to you, let me KNOW so I can get it re-sent, and not let the issue get sucked up at Amazon and absorbed. So many are NOT reaching back to let us know the widgets got there -- I think 3 out of my last 10 helps responded back, and 2 more after I approached by asking in the thread later.

Again, not about thanks or public posts, just let me know if Amazon dropped the ball so I can contact them to not leave you hanging while they hold my (meager) dollars :)

META Becareful with scam on here and other subs too.

I just checked from other sub there are some scam going on.

Pretending to help you out, but if you fall this scam, you will

Be left with more debt.

Becareful if somebody saying giving you sudden large amount money to paypal/bank/cash app/check.

They will give you money actually, and then they might ask you to transfer to other bank/check.

And after that, the other victim (the original person who owned that money) will claim dispute to your bank account.

And it will be left as minus on your account.

So i just wanted warning people don't give your bank details etc so easily.

And if anyone already fell into this scam, call to police and bank with evidence you have. Police will able to track down check, and once it done bank probably help you with claiming dispute / chargeback.

Thank you for reading.

Stay safe x

Stay safe.

UPDATE: I reported the situation to CashApp, and they got back in touch with me and asked for more information. If you have fallen victim to this, you may want to file a fraud complaint with them as well.

In the App, "Support" -> "Something Else" -> "Account Settings" -> "Recognize & Report Scams"-> "Contact Support", then highlight the fraudulent payment. You will be asked to provide details. I stated "This user has been fraudulently accepting assistance payments meant for others on Reddit's r/assistance".

-----

Don't be like me. Don't get scammed. This was a first for me.

A user posted yesterday asking for assistance. I messaged them for information.

Before they were able to respond to my message, someone else (who had a similar reddit account name, now deleted) sent a message to me, with the subject "Thanks for the Help", and provided their cashapp handle.

...and like an idiot I sent some cash, along with a note to mark the request as fulfilled.

Imagine my surprise when the person I was really trying to help told me they hadn't received the money.

A bonehead mistake, and that's on me. However, there are lots of scammers crawling out from under the refrigerator given the current environment.

Double-check WHO you are talking to, before you send assistance.

META Stay vigilant everyone! My debit card was compromised somehow

A charge for one NZD or .62 USD was placed on my debit card yesterday from an art gallery in Auckland, NZ.

This may seem like nothing, but a charge like that gives a thief a lot of information. That tiny charge let someone know that they had an active card and that it was capable of making international purchases.

I'm not asking for help, the card is already cancelled, and I still have alternate means of accessing my account. I just wanted to warn everyone to keep a close eye on your financial institutions because there is always someone out there that wants to rip you off.

I'm going to be using most of my available funds to rebuild a small travel trailer as a surprise for a friend of mine who recently lost their home, but I'd like to say that this community is one of the best on reddit and it warms my heart to see people helping others. I hope to be able to help more of you in the future, but after I get this last round out I'll be out for a few months!

Pay it forward and be kind to others :)

META I think the rules here are a little exclusionary and extra.

I just wanted to add my two cents about the rules here, respectfully.

I think the rules are a little messed up. Register, comment karma, must have activity within 15 days no spaces. If you are genuinely in need of help, for as little as £30 or whatever the case may be, chances are you're not the kind of person actively participating in subreddits that aren't beneficial to your emergency situation.

I don't want to have to go onto subreddits and fake happiness and joy when I'm in dire financial straits, simply to get enough karma to ask for a humble donation on here. I hate the idea that they may be a single mum out there who comes onto this sub everyday all depressed with her screaming hungry three kids and sees all these other people getting support while she doesn't because she didn't have enough energy to post selfies or poetry on other subs lately.

I just escaped domestic violence in February and am living on my own for the first time ever in a bed and breakfast, with no friends and no family (orphan). In 11 years I've survived five years of depression and two suicide attempts. It is HARD. Every waking minute is spent on worrying when I'm going to be kicked out (most likely August when Covid hotel laws are lifted) and what I'm going to do about it without any savings and therefore no chance of putting a deposit in anywhere else. I'll most likely be homeless. I just don't have the mental energy and creativity to post things that would solicit karma. Mods, do you have any idea how upsetting it is when you can see there are clearly people out there kind and willing enough to help, but the obstacles seem almost impossible to overcome?

I completely understand that it makes people feel better to have some form of regulation on here, but is all of that necessary? REALLY. I don't think scamming is as much of a huge deal as this sub makes it out to be. If people have the money to give, it should neither be a "pity competition" to get it, or an intense interrogation about why they need it or whether they're deserving enough. There are so many other ways you can prove that you're a real person in need, but if someone wants £10 because they want £10, is it really the end of the world. It's still a good deed regardless.

I don't know guys, maybe I'm just feeling sensitive this morning. I could be wrong, but I DO believe this requires some reassessment. I hope you'll take my concerns on board because this isn't trolling in any way, but a serious attempt at trying to make this space a little more accessible. Thanks for reading.

TLDR: I feel the rules in this sub are doing a huge disservice to those who may need it most.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for your kindness and thoughtful responses! I am definitely seeing it from the other side too now, which is interesting!

META Scammer about. Beware

The user mightytowen has made a post offering help to someone. He ended up messaging me to fulfill my comment. He offered to give me $100 and loan me the other $200 I needed. Cool, fine. I dont want a handout. I'm able to repay. He proceeded to ask me who I banked through so he could send me the funds. I told him paypal or Zelle only. He said that wouldn't work. He only can deposit into a "good bank account " in the US. When I told him it was plainly posted in this subreddit group that it is against rules and I wasn't giving him my bank info, he has been ignoring me. May want to check into him. Brand new account just created also.

Mods, screenshots of our conversation is available.

META Some ways to make money with your phone

If you have Android there's a few apps you can use to get PayPal money or gift cards. Some of these might be on iOS.

Appflame- you play games and earn points to get PayPal money or other gift cards. You can even let a game run without touching it to rack up points but the longer you play a game the longer it takes to get points. I usually delete a game after it takes 5 hours to get points unless I actually enjoy the game enough to keep it.

Curious cat: money for surveys- you get points by answering surveys. You can cash out at 100 points minimum to PayPal only. It's somewhat fast and I seem to always have surveys.

Qmee instant cash for surveys- you see how much survey is worth in cents and you cash out to PayPal or gift cards. You can cash out at any amount.

Mobile performance meter - you download it and go through set up and it kinda tracks what you do on your phone to better help app and phone developers. You can also answer surveys to get points quicker. There's no PayPal option but a lot of gift cards and one is a virtual visa gift card.

Receipt hog- you upload your receipt for points and can cash out to PayPal or Amazon or visa gift cards. It's slow to get enough points to get money but all you do is upload your receipt or family and friends receipts. You can only do 3 from the same store a day though.

I use these to earn some extra for ordering things through eBay such as phone accessories or other things. And they all work and I have never had a negative experience with these apps.

Others have commented these work good.

Quick thoughts - earn gift cards (going to try it)

And if you use Google opinion rewards you can transfer that to PayPal (something I'm glad to learn)

META Gentle reminder -- Please let your helpers know when you get your wish list items.

You don't need to post a thank you, just send them a message on reddit that you received your widget/food item. Shoot them a follow up post on your OP or send a DM that says it got there. I send out food off Amazon lists frequently and so few ever let me know it got there. If it didn't show up let me know so I can make Amazon re-send.

Again, few of us want thanks, just a Huzzah! Got here is fine...

META Amazon is getting back on track, so let's do a Wish List Workshop

Amazon is getting stock back in, some ready to ship next week or a bit later, so this is a great time to make an Amazon food wish list.

Need to start one? Read this https://www.reddit.com/r/Assistance/comments/36aqn8/how_to_make_an_amazon_wishlist/ and then post your list below. I will make sure you have it ready to post correctly :)

Already have one? Post it here so I can make sure it is set with your address linked to the link, and other things people sometimes don't realize prevent their lists from being accessible :)
