There's no American who would introduce them self like "As a US citizen"...they'd just say they're American. Only dipshit foreigners who insist "American" refers to anyone from either North or South America would say that phrase.

They bitch that we call ourselves by our ancestry sometimes but when we try to forge an American identity they get pissed because Latin America is a thing.

I sadly think you underestimate the “pick me” Americans. Even I’ll sometimes use “US citizen” instead of “American” when I don’t feel like arguing when theres a bigger point.
