Did my town just invest in a mascot?
My small town’s police department has invested significant time and money into its K-9 unit, including the dog, vehicles, and all necessary equipment. However, I’ve noticed that the dog barks constantly—even when not working, while in the car, when my kids walk by, and at other times. There have also been eyewitness reports of the dog failing to detect hard drugs during vehicle searches.
Is this typical behavior for a working police dog, or are we essentially dealing with a pet?
The townspeople often praise the dog for its work, and while I’m not supportive of law enforcement, I don’t want to be overly critical. But as a taxpayer, I feel it’s important to ask if this is a justified expense when the budget is reviewed.

Most police dogs don't actually detect drugs at all. The handler gives them (nearly) imperceptible cues to make the dog signal. The pigs then use this as pretext to search without a warrant. It's all intentional. Just as the cops don't hire smart people, a competent dog is less useful than an obedient one.

Careful - that "Mascot" will end up at your school. Where the pigs will "Warn" the kids that the dog will bite them if they don't listen to Pigs. It's a psy-ops. Meant, intended, to indoctrinate kids that Government Dogs are OK to attack human beings. As long as it's gov-dogs and you're not listening to their commands. PULL Your Kids outta school BEFORE this happens.

The incessant barking is typical behavior of some police dogs that I’ve encountered but not all. The ones at the airport seem to be better behaved.

Eyewitness reports of the dog failing to detect hard drugs during vehicle searches?
Like multiple searches?
How would there be eyewitnesses to something like that? Did someone with hard drugs in their car tell you, like multiple times? That’s not information that is usually just on hand by strangers.
Edit: You have all the information, and you obviously don’t want to share more details so what is anyone supposed to say or do here? Talk shit about a dog for being incompetent? It’s a dog. Take it up with your city council. Idk, weird ass post.

Respectfully, I’m not here to get stuck on details or defend myself. I’m looking for people’s opinions on the question. If you don’t understand or believe me that’s cool.

I never said I don’t believe you, but now that you are getting so defensive about it, it does beg the question…

Not defensive, just being straight forward with you. But sure, I’m totally lying. 🤥

Don’t worry about it. People get pissy on this sub for some reason and forget that we all came here because we all share the opinion that ACAB. The pigs and the bootlickers are making all of us angrier and we sometimes direct our hostilities where they aren’t deserved.

You do realize most police dogs have a specific job whether it be sniffing drugs, finding dead bodies, finding live bodies, or apprehension? How can you be certain what the dog was intended for?

I think most of these dogs don't detect anything. They're trained to respond to the pig's signal to "find" something.
