The titles sensationalizing the situation a bit. Many states, like Texas, has laws banning any political merchandise, articles of clothing, etc from within 100 feet of a polling site. In my county, I cannot vote while wearing a Harris Shirt the same way someone wearing a Trump hat can’t vote without removing it.

117

u/CarrotChunx Nov 05 '24

Good things Harris voters don't wear her merch like a weird identity.

Today I passed someone with trump painted on their fucking car. Weirdos man.

27

u/TurelSun Nov 05 '24

I mean even if you did and say forgot you were wearing it or just didn't know it was against the law, they're just going to ask you to reverse your shirt or take of your hat. Its pretty damn simple. The point is that people shouldn't be campaigning or trying to convince people how to vote at the poll locations. It applies to everyone regardless of what party or candidate you support.

2

u/de9ausser Nov 05 '24

I literally did not know any of this and was gonna wear my Green Day Nimrod t shirt today, thank you internet. Vote safely everyone

10

u/AustinYQM Nov 05 '24

I accidently wore an "LBJ All The Way" shirt to the polls in 2016 and they asked me to turn it inside out. I said "oh shit sorry" and complied even if I think that's a bit silly.

2

u/3-2-1-backup Nov 06 '24

That came up at a polling place I was working in 2018, so I called legal for guidance. Legal's response was if it were merch for a candidate on the ballot, then it was electioneering. If they weren't on the ballot (i.e. Trump in 2018) then it was fine.

1

u/ent_jemimma Nov 06 '24

Today I drove by a house completely covered in those trump Batman flags where the bat is wearing a tie... Oh and I live in northern Ontario Canada haha

My brother was forced to go home and change his vote for Pedro shirt, it is a completely politically neutral law and everyone needs to follow it.

Same goes in my neck of the woods. I didn't even bother wearing my goofy Turd Ferguson 2024 shirt.

1

u/atheistpianist Nov 06 '24

Correct, I live in Texas and voted early last week. They had poll workers posted at the entry doors to the building I went to whose sole purpose was to not admit people wearing political merch. I of course wasn’t wearing any and encountered approximately zero issues.

I still don't understand how Libertarians can support MAGA. It's antithetical to almost every libertarian position. I know the dems aren't a match either, but sheesh.

11

u/Aberration-13 Nov 05 '24

american libertarianism is fake libertarianism where the belief above all other beliefs is corporations and capitalism are gods to be worshipped so it fits in nicely with fascist repubs

24

u/Iannelli Nov 05 '24

Libertarians are a joke and almost always have been. That's how.

7

u/Real_Location1001 Nov 05 '24

The party for sure. I think most small L libertarians are a weird combo of conservative on fiscal issues and social liberals.....at least that's where I used to be. I made the mistake of voting L as a protest against Trump and Clinton....I won't make that mistake again. Clinton was an ass but objectively better than Trump. Who knew that not being a complete shit human being would be the low low bar for political candidates.

7

u/mcrib Nov 05 '24

That was the Libertarian Party of the 90s and aughts. Since then they’re just a weird bunch of GOP folks hyper focused on the 4th Amendment. The social liberalism is all but gone. They shifted allegiance from Ron Paul to Rand Paul who is nothing but a card carrying Republican hypocrite.

I stand by that vote (I did it too). I hope it forced the Democrats to really think about who they put forward and how. It really felt like "Hilary WILL win, she WILL be the first woman president, we have chosen our candidate and you WILL vote for her."

I've felt better voting blue since. Even though Harris didn't win a primary, it is essentially a VP being unopposed in the primary (like Gore was essentially unopposed in 2000).

5

u/Real_Location1001 Nov 06 '24

That’s a good take honestly. I hope that Trumpism is rejected and we can get back to civilized bickering

2

u/choppingboardham Nov 07 '24

Agreed. We can call Bush a war criminal. Romney this. McCain that. But I would take the worst parts of all three of them over Trump.

I want that civil discourse we used to have. Sure, a few friendly jabs, but ones that make the other person smile, not start a coup on our democracy.

2

u/Ranting_Demon Nov 06 '24

A lot of the 'libertarians' who support MAGA are not actual libertarians. In the same way how the overwhelming number of self-proclaimed 'centrists' only ever agree with and support rightwing positions.

Most of these people are embarrassed rightwingers and fascists who are in favour of far-right and fascist positions but who don't want to openly march under that banner because they don't want to be associated with the ideology or the kind of troglodytes who usually say the quiet parts out loud.

17

u/Cosmic_Quasar Nov 05 '24

Funny story about not understanding what you're doing... my aunt is a die hard MAGA and very deep into conspiracy theories. Definitely believes that Trump won the last election, that the riots in MN about George Floyd were all people paid by some Soros guy to be there, and that vaccines have microchips in them.

My parents told me, yesterday, that apparently she changed her legal status as a resident, they couldn't tell me exactly how, but something sovereign citizen like. Then went all "Pikachu Surprise Face" when she turned up to the polls to vote and found out she no longer can since she's not recognized as a US Citizen anymore.

In what state is electioneering legal at the polling places?

There are signs everywhere at polls that you cannot wear political shit!

Funny story though: Several elections ago, I wore a team Russia hockey jersey to vote in the primaries as a little lark (my favorite player is Russian and anti-putin and this was well before the Ukrainian invasion). My state bans political clothing/accessories (rightly so) and the election officials all had looks of wheels turning in their heads. You could see they were trying to decide if it was a political clothing article or not. They said nothing BUT I sure as shit cannot/would not wear that jersey again!

You cannot display any party endorsement at the polling site it's called electioneering, as such it will bar you from casting a vote. I have had citizens remove their t-shirt that had the image of a presidential candidate on the front and back. It has happened several times throughout the years and each individual had to remove said article of clothing or relinquish their right to cast a vote. They all complied without any incident

2

u/frisbee212 Nov 06 '24

The laws are simple,... bring a valid ID, and don't wear any clothing that aspires one party, or the other..

Just like you have to be so many yards away to pass out a flier or stickers from the polling booth, wearing a t-shirt or hat, is same fucking thing...

A free and fair voting system requires every one to respect the system, aka, the rules. Otherwise it's just pandemonium.

This is the third "you can't vote because of your clothing" I've seen this week, and it's always been Trumpers throwing a tantrump.

1

I voted today. I live in a small town of 3500. It's mostly farmers and blue collar workers out here. I didn't see one red hat (or any other party) because the people understand the law, apparently. There's also that big sign on the door that says, "NO ELECTIONEERING." Apparently, most of the people around me know how to read and comprehend words.

1

u/69vuman Nov 05 '24

In my county in middle TN, Security escorts such people to the exit, and if they return to the polling place with the MAGA hat on, they are not admitted. Persons with political paraphernalia are not even allowed to stay in the line to vote, or even electioneer while in line.

1

1

u/Stardust_Particle Nov 06 '24

When they show up in line with a campaign hat/shirt what have you, they should be informed and stopped BEFORE they enter the building and certainly not given a ballot. It appears that we need a police officer at some of these polling places. Magats are so desperate, childish, and disrespectful like their cult leader who taught them that this behavior was acceptable.

1
