Guy sitting next to me on the plane wants to switch seats (I was in a window seat). When I refused, he reached around my shoulder and shut the window

Post image

When I went to open it again he asked me to shut it because he "wanted to take a nap". I ignored him, so he asks a flight attendant to shut it for him. Absolute dick move. He did end up sleeping, but I'm still pissed about it.

I'll bet being a Flight Attendant is exhausting. You're essentially babysitting a bunch of "adults"

My whole life I wanted to be an air hostess. I got a job in customer service and turned into Kenneth Copeland immediately.

“metal tube full of demons”

128

u/cbessette 4d ago

The quote in full:

"Criticized at the time for his use of extravagant planes, Copeland argued that travel for his work would be difficult, nay, impossible without them. The Texas-based preacher invoked his mentor, prosperity gospel preacher Oral Roberts, who Copeland said faced unsolicited requests for prayer when he flew on public airliners, "agitating his spirit."

"You can't manage that today, in this dope-filled world, get in a long tube with a bunch of demons," Copeland told fellow televangelist Jesse Duplantis, who has faced similar backlash for asking his followers to bankroll a $54 million jet. "And it's deadly."

The biggest thing I've learned by becoming an adult is that most adults are still children... They just got older and more ornery, but didn't change in any other way whatsoever.

288

u/TheLurkerSpeaks 4d ago

If you ever want proof of this, get promoted. One day you're a colleague, a chum palling around with the other staff. When you become a supervisor all these same, rational people suddenly become the whiniest bitches you've ever met. Your worklplace immediately becomes a daycare. It's mindboggling.

True, but that also works the other way around, though. Perfectly fine people can become total dicks if they become a manager. The less power you have, the more you wanna show that you have it and that you're the boss.

I once had a guy ask to switch with me because I had the aisle seat. I'm 6'5 and need to stretch my legs every so often or my knees start to hurt.

I told him firmly that No, I specifically paid for this seat and that I was significantly taller than him. He kept insisting that I need to move.

In my best angry dad voice I snapped with, "Is this what we are going to do? Start shit before our 4 hour flight because if so, it's going to be an awkward flight."

He dropped it and didn't look my way the rest of the flight.

u/RockNRollMama 4d ago

lol I’m 5’1 (barely) and always fly aisle because I absolutely hate not having a side free. Also I never take out my air pods but don’t have anything on until I’m fully situated. Got on to a flight a few months back and reached my early teens row only to find an older gentleman sitting in my seat. I just looked at him, then my phone for the boarding pass, then up to the overhead where my small duffle went up.

I didn’t say anything but pointed to the row and the man got up saying “oh you must be in the window or middle” as he got out of the way to let me in. I sat down in my seat and began to settle in as he started to get angry and agitated with me. I clicked the call button as I wasn’t dealing with it and he was blocking the boarding process.

A flight attendant approached quickly and before this man had the chance to whatever I took out my air pod and sad “this gentleman was super confused about his seat so if you can please help him sort it it out I’d really appreciate it as he’s getting a little aggressive with me”. The look on his face was priceless as he turned to argue his case to the FA but she cut him off and said “sir please take your bag and proceed to your seat so we can get on with the flight”.

He walked off cursing me under his breath, to the back of the plane. Anyway that’s the THIRD time I’ve been in a stolen seat situation. People are such assholes.

896

u/mbm66 4d ago

Wait, he wasn't even in the middle or window seat, he was in a whole different row? That's some cheek.

658

u/RockNRollMama 4d ago

I had no idea either. I just wanted to sit in the seat that I paid for. Ever since I joined Reddit like just under 10yrs ago the amount of stolen seats stories has gotten insane. It seems that the best solution is to feign ignorance and let the FA handle it. I’m actually a VERY confrontational person so I have to walk a fine line so I don’t get put on a no fly list. Hence getting the FA sooner rather than later.

236

u/two-headed-sexbeast 4d ago

This self awareness is commendable. I hope it serves you well. It sounds like you played this situation very well.

70

u/westviadixie 4d ago

whats that like? being confrontational? I'd like to learn some of your ways.

53

u/lillyshelbey 4d ago

I’m not who you asked, but as a person who is confrontational…It’s lame, because 97% of the people I meet avoid confrontation and are afraid of it (making me look aggressive). The other 3% are typically Karen’s and irrational, or in this case outright rude plane seat stealers and you have to realize their lack of brain cells and manners is not your circus…even when you want to treat them like a monkey.

Slightly different but I decided to take a 6 hour greyhound earlier this year and there was a lady infront of me in the wrong seat. It was no big deal, we were an early stop and there were plenty of empty seats so the guy who was supposed to sit there ended up just sitting with me after they both checked their passes and she claimed they booked for the same seat. Cue 2 stops later after 3 hours of driving and she goes "wait a second... This isnt heading south" she proceeds to spend the next 3 hours blaming the driver for not checking her ticket properly (spoiler: she skipped the line during my stop when the driver called for reboarders to get on first.... she was not a reboarder just didnt want to wait the line which means she didnt give the driver a chance to check her ticket), calling family to complain about how her 4 hour drive just turned into a 16 hour one, and telling every new boarder that she was going to talk to customer service when she was let off to get a refund and free ride back. No idea what happened but it was like... Lady you had multiple opportunities to read your ticket and listen to instructions but you chose not to.

This reminds me of the time I was on a flight and a gentleman fumbling around we are all trying to get seated. He was very clearly holding up the aisle, until one man finally yelled from two or three people behind, “Let’s go! What is this your first flight or something??!”

So, the middle-aged flustered man holding everyone up turned around in a panic and said, “YES! This actually is my first flight, I’m freaking out, and I don’t even know what I’m doing!”

Immediately, everyone realized he was being honest and jumped up to help him. Everyone apologized lol. No one actually expected this to be his first flight. 😅🤣

Wait till they go to sleep and then get up to use the restroom, every 30 minutes or whenever he falls asleep.

849

u/acclaimedmistake 4d ago

Careful. They're probably battling with the kind of person that would straight up steal your seat if you vacate it for even a second.

Although that's a good reason to get crew involved that bit faster, I guess.

But if he steals your seat, you can put the tray table down and refuse to move it when he has to use the restroom. "Sorry, I have important work on my phone.tablet.laptop that can't wait"

122

u/Black_Magic_M-66 4d ago

If they steal your seat, you can just ask for it back and the flight attendant will make them move.

18

u/Happydancer4286 4d ago

I’ve had a seat stolen by a woman who absolutely would not move for the Delta flight attendant. It was a full flight She insisted I could sit at the back in her seat. I had booked my seat months before the wing, my favorite place to sit. I could tell the flight attendant was getting angry, and she was also getting exasperated with me telling me we were getting ready to leave the gate and I had to take a seat. I chickened out and took the seat next to the back toilet door. I simmered the entire flight. I will not agree to switching seats ever again. And I’ll probably get nasty. 😊

28

u/FRIKI-DIKI-TIKI 4d ago

If the flight had not taken off, the flight attendant should have had her removed from the flight.

Tell the attendant what he keeps trying to do and ask to be separated? Mention something like you paid extra for the view and such

767

u/textile1957 4d ago

Better yet, since he keeps reaching around, open it and when he reaches around again, tell the man to please not touch you and say it audibly. One more time, call the attendant and let him tell on himself when he explains why he keeps touching you.

628

u/Why-R-People-So-Dumb 4d ago

Yeah don't explain to the person you paid extra...you pick a window seat you get window seat control. Someone tried to do that to my son once and play adult rank on him that he should listen to elders, I told them to get a better job so they could get a charter flight and in the meantime pick on someone their own size.

Sometimes you have to call the flight attendant. I only fly once a year, but I save up my points and fly first class. I am more than happy to change seats with someone if it means they can sit next to a family member. But on one leg last year I had a passenger ask me just to switch with them, not so they can sit with their kid or husband, or whatever. They weren’t even in first class, guess they just picked the only guy that didn’t look like he belonged there cause I wear flannel and work boots instead of a suit. I paid $1200 worth of airline miles for this seat, pound sand.

121

u/Excludos 4d ago

Takes a special kind of person to go to a completely different class and ask to change seat with you so you can get a vastly inferior experience to the one you paid for

27

u/TimeNail 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yes you gotta hand it to the guy he's got some front to try that. I'd never ever think of it. Does it ever work?

Sometimes I see people try something and think surely that never ever works but maybe it does maybe people feel bullied / under pressure and they are people pleasers

37

u/ComfortableReveal807 4d ago

My first ever concert was Rammstein back in '99. Of course being my first concert I had no concept of upper-level seats vs General Admission ("pit") tickets, which of course offer two very different experiences and suffice it to say that many Rammstein fans, at least the young ones, would almost universally prefer a GA ticket over a seated ticket, without even thinking about it. They might even call you fucking stupid for asking which they'd prefer. I know that now.

But when I got to the venue and my buddy lamented the fact we had upper level seats, I was like "huh?" And he explained we'd be up there with chairs while everyone else is down in front of the stage rocking out. That kinda bummed me out. So I stood by the entrance to the venue for a a few minutes, and a dapper looking dude with his dolled up girlfriend arrived and presented tickets to the dude at the GA/pit entrance.

Figuring I had nothing to lose, I said "hey man--no pressure or anything, but if you happen to be interested in considering a trade, I've got two second-level tickets right at the front up stairs. You guys look pretty nice and it's hard to imagine you want to get all sweaty standing shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of amped up Rammstein fans for two hours. So, if you want to swap, downstairs is definitely more my kinda of scene. 🤷‍♂️"

The guy thought for a second, looked at his hot girlfriend, probably imagined all the dudes who'd be copping a feel all night in GA, and said "right on, man. Deal."

That all said, these are different situations. I don't know anyone who's a glutton for economy-class seating and the paltry food and beverage options, offensive lack of leg room, and just general malaise that hangs in the air behind those magical first class curtains--but that person might exist somewhere.

The perk of the middle seat is you get both arm rests.

The perk of the window seat is you get to control the window

The perk of the aisle is never having to climb over anyone

The downside of aisle is always having to get up for the other two!

117

u/aHOMELESSkrill 4d ago

For sure. But I’d rather get up than be crawled over.

Downside of aisle is having to get up for the others.

Downside of middle is you are more crammed and have the window seater crawling over you if they get up.

Downside of the window is having the others try to control the window and having to climb over two seats to go to the bathroom.

125

u/Probable_Bot1236 4d ago

Downside of middle is you are more crammed

On a recent flight I was in the middle, with the aisle seat occupied by an obese, sweaty woman, and the window occupied by an obese, sweaty man.

Physically, it was godd*man miserable. You know what's gross on a plane? Being so warm you sweat. You know what's even worse? Your row-mates sweating on you...

My much-appreciated good fortune is that we had wonderful conversation the whole three and half hours hours (she turned out to be hugely insightful about wildlife conservation issues, and he was a professional chef!).

But afterward I couldn't wait to take a shower at my hotel!

68

u/aHOMELESSkrill 4d ago

The last time I had a middle seat the woman I who had the window seat’s daughter had the aisle seat in front of us. So I selflessly offered to switch seats and the daughter (who was maybe 14) was excited to be able to sit next to her mom. And I was excited not to have a middle seat.

91

u/Kongbuck 4d ago

The way I've always tried to couch it in my head is that the other person isn't a jerk for asking, but I'm also not a jerk for saying "no." Surprisingly, a lot of people have an issue with that last part.

Exactly. Don’t even talk to him. Have the flight attendant enforce the rules.

99

u/peelen 4d ago

Have the flight attendant enforce the rules.

But this is what happened, and the flight attendant somehow sided with middle sit passenger.

56

u/ChronicY2kk 4d ago

Did the flight attendant side with him though? Or did he ask the flight attendant and they said nothing to the attendent? Because what i read suggested they didnt say anything to the attendant afte the other passenger asked.

In July, I flew Emirates 14.5 hours overnight in economy and they had a small pouch with some hygiene items.

None of the other Emirates flights I took, which were during the day, had the same amenities. So it looks like it depends on the airline and the length/time of flight?

282

u/NoSkillzDad 4d ago

Emirates is a different "breed". The best service I've had in economy was in Emirates, no contest.

99

u/Higreen420 4d ago

Singapore hook it up too

110

u/WickedYetiOfTheWest 4d ago

I’ve found most non American based major airlines are leagues better than the big ones in the states

87

u/Funny_Yesterday_5040 4d ago

It doesn't take much.

102

u/Ionovarcis 4d ago

In southwest, if you go super economy, you need to run on a hamster wheel to power the engines

28

u/AurumArgenteus 4d ago

It beats their budget economy option. Do you have any idea how hard it is to stop a plane? But passengers are cheaper than brakes.

I won the lottery on a long-haul and they bumped me up to Business Class. It was the most amazingly calming and relaxing flight.

Too bad I was going to a work project...

10

u/Tough-Refuse6822 4d ago

Through mostly politeness and with a little exaggeration, I managed to get my wife and I free business class upgrade on United from Zurich to New Jersey after flight delays, lost luggage, and missed connections during our one and only trip to Italy years ago. It was the greatest flight I’ve ever had. I doubt I’ll ever experience that again.

This is it. I flew Turkish airlines from LAX to Istanbul, and we got a nice little back with a toothbrush, toothpaste, sleeping mask, earplugs, comfy socks, and slippers. Flight from Istanbul to Barcelona did not have it

I was flying economy China Southern from Heathrow to Shanghai last year. We got eye masks, toothbrush and toothpaste and the rest of the basics.

Had a pretty damn good salmon lunch as well.

I think it's just plain luck dependent on the carrier you get.

I just get drunk and piss myself mid flight. It's actually really nice because then I'll get personally escorted off the flight first.

Surprised the flight attended supported him on that one

59

u/motherofcattos 4d ago edited 4d ago

If it's nighttime the flight attendants will ask everybody to shut down the windows. And if it's daytime and there is strong light coming in, it makes sense that they would be on his side. The problem here is that the guy reached out over OP's shoulder instead of asking her politely.

30

u/Hs80g29 4d ago

I was recently on a red eye flight where the only window not closed was the one of the person next to me. The whole plane would have been dark if not for her window.

I asked them to close it, and unlike the OP they obliged. I wouldn't have reached over them if they declined, but declining without having a great reason is pretty inconsiderate.

From what I’ve heard/seen, if someone wants to sleep they do tend to ask if you can shut the window, especially on longer flights. I guess it gets priority since it impacts more people over you wanting to look out the window, I suppose.

What a douche. I imagine he thinks it’s his own personal plane ride. I had this happen to me on a bus once. I was pregnant, nauseous and got into it with a guy that wanted me to close the window that I WAS SITTING NEXT TO. He reached across and shut the window, I barfed on his shoes. It all worked out.

We were taxiing to the runway and the woman seated behind me reached over and snapped my window shut. I looked over to her and, with an eyemask on her forehead, she very bitchily said she intended to sleep on this flight. She was furious when I opened my window and said I paid for for a window seat so I can look out of it.

Like, use your eyemask. Did you forget you had it around your head already and just needed to lower it? Instead she spent the flight glaring.

84

u/MadTownMich 4d ago

Happened to me a couple times. I told them flat out that they should bring an eye mask or pay for the window seat. I always choose window because I like to view everything, including at night the cities or occasional giant boats, or during the day, clouds, mountains, cities, waves. Don’t like it? Buy the window seat yourself!

32

u/AccursedFishwife 4d ago

Happened to me once, middle seat guy demanded that I close the window. I lied and told the guy I had claustrophobia and I needed the window open.

Guy raised his voice and told me that it sounded like I was too ill to fly. I just smiled and said, ok, and for some reason that really pissed him off, he turned beet-red and angrily played on his phone, stabbing the screen for 2 hours.

It was uncomfortable but I enjoyed the win. Still, it was so surreal that a human being was able to be actively angry for 2 straight hours.

One time I was boarding and this kid in his 20s was in my window seat. I politely informed him that it was my seat. He was like “I’m pretty sure I have the window seat.” So I showed him my ticket. He tried to make me let him sit there anyway, like “I just really like the window seat.” I didn’t say it out loud, but I was like “Yea, me too. That’s why I booked it ahead of time…” He proceeded to whine the whole trip about how he really liked the window.
