How I woke up to see my car this morning...

Post image

It got towed... Maybe. Still trying to figure it out.

Hmmm. Only 3 possible reasons.

  • Stolen

  • Towed

  • Repossessed

Which one is it for you?

This is a possibility. One time I legit LOST my car. Had no idea where I parked it when I woke up, a friend had driven me home. Took 2 days to find it.

90

u/cold-corn-dog 2d ago

This happened to me once. Turned out that I was responsible and walked home like 10 miles that night.

This happened to me in college. Man I don’t miss that

29

u/Federal-Commission87 2d ago

I had a buddy in college that left the bar and slept in a car he thought was his. Didn't even look the same... it was just the same color.

33

u/MoeKneeKah 1d ago

Haha had a friend climb in the partly open window of some random car to sleep and she disengaged the parking break and it rolled into a pole. Police saw it as they drove past and went to investigate. She was peacefully asleep in the passenger seat. They looked up the registration and realized it was right in front of the owners house, so they knock on the door of the house and the owner was raging drunk inside the house. They assumed he crashed the car so they arrested him and woke my friend up so they could tow the car. They even drove her home and broke into her house because she didn’t have her keys. She’s a fucking legend.

8

u/Top_Cloud_2381 1d ago

Now that’s a movie scene!

If I had a dollar for every time my BIL called me on Sunday morning saying he'd lost his car, he'd still owe me $285

28

u/Bryancreates 2d ago

This happened to a friend of mine. She parked at a McDonalds and someone picked her up and drove her to a party. She got high/drunk, she was 19. The next day a mutual friend of both of ours drove her back to her car and it was gone. She was freaking out, calling her parents, called the police, filed a report. My other friend had to wait around forever during all this. Police located her bmw at a McDonalds down the street.

13

u/WloveW 1d ago

I can almost feel the giant, hot wave of shame washing over the poor little lush as the cop told her. That's a story to tell your kids when you are teaching them to drive.

10

u/Bryancreates 1d ago

Bold of you to assume she had that kind of self awareness. I think she’s a doctor now.

Towed... I once owed two ford taurus of the same color and year. I got tags that last till nov of 25 on the one right before it broke down. Swapped the tags to the one that was running. Sold the one that broke down. The down bad towing company checks vin numbers or something. Much sad

198

u/shapesize 2d ago

Ah. So it’s only r/mildlyinfuriating because you got caught doing something you shouldn’t have. Lol

84

u/goodsnpr 2d ago

It's wrong, yes, but also I feel like this , potentially, a good example of a victimless crime. He paid for a registration, which usually also means insurance and for many states inspections, so it's not like he's using the road without paying for it's upkeep or anything, but not seeing if they could swap the registration or at least refund the other one is wrong.

40

u/Synexis 1d ago

I completely agree with your sentiment, except it seems that’s not quite what happened in this particular case…

“I am well aware that what I did is illegal. I just hoped I could ride it out a year and save some money. Lesson learned I guess.” -OP, a bit further down

OP had to have been in the wrong. How often do you hear of someone’s car getting accidentally towed or for parking correctly?

62

u/STAXOBILLS 2d ago

Reminds me of my grandpa getting farm use plates for a 96 ford ranger we used a farm truck/learner and then putting them on his 2021 Chrysler Pacifica to drive weekly 3hr round trips

53

u/whereugoincityboy 2d ago

My brother swapped the plates on his 2012 Toyota pickup for antique plates when he was trying to hide from the police. I don't know about that boy.

This isn’t mildly infuriating it’s karma

10

u/PassiveMenis88M 2d ago

So you illegally swapped your plates. Which means they towed an unregistered and uninsured car. This is not the towing companies fault.

4

u/Monk315 2d ago

You think they get out of the car to check vin numbers on every parked vehicle? Wouldn't it be far more likely that your previous car was registered with new plates and this invalidated the plates you swapped out?

12

u/Otherwise_Singer6043 2d ago

That's actually a felony to put tags on a different vehicle than they were purchased for. Might have a difficult time getting it back.

Why have you settled for this solution? Walk into the office and ask that your car be logged as a resident.. Does the lease say you must have plates that match where you are right now? If not they should be paying for the tow and resolving the parking lot issue.

100

u/shapesize 2d ago

This comment is 100% correct. Unless your lease states you can only use a parking spot for cars with in state plates, they cannot exclude your vehicle. But they may need to know that so they know it is your vehicle. Now they can update the lease to say “for safety reasons non-local vehicles, including those with out of state plates, will be towed at the owner’s expense” and the you’re stuck.

What are the rules for the parking lot then? Might look over your lease agreement, see what it says. If they changed things after you signed to agree to them, you might have some options

7

u/becausemercy 2d ago

This happened to me when I lived in Maryland and PA stopped giving out registration stickers for plates so my apartment complex thought my registration was out of date. Thankfully I wasn't charged for the tow/storage, but I did have to take an Uber about 20 minutes to get my car back

Call your local police department, the non urgent #. If it was towed I do believe they need to be notified.

Or call your property manager office and ask for the number to the towing company they use and call them

3.9k

u/PrethorynOvermind 2d ago

Might also be worth raising the concern to the property manager and filing a police report for any video surveillance if an investigation is needed.

My car was towed once from the apartment complex in NJ I lived at. I called the non-emergency number and they sent an officer. He said that no, tow companies do not need to notify the police.

I ended up having to find the placard that shows the tow company information and prices completely covered by bushes and when I bitched at them they just told me to pay the fees to get my car back and pound sand.

339

u/CubicDice 2d ago

I once parked outside my girlfriend's apartment on the last Sunday of the month. I stupidly did not realize they do street cleaning the first Monday of the month. When I went outside in the morning my car was gone and I started panicking. Turns out I was towed, but I was not towed to a yard. They towed me to the next available parking spot (nice of them). However the parking warden came and clamped my car. They said I didn't pay for a ticket, which they were correct. However I did not physically park my car there, hence why I've no ticket. I had to pay to have the clamp removed. An angle grinder would've been cheaper.

255

u/Weird1Intrepid 2d ago

Lock pick set off Amazon. You can legally remove a wheel clamp, but you can't legally damage it.

92

u/Rathwood 2d ago

If they never get the boot back, they'll have no way of knowing if I damaged it.

On the other hand, perhaps it would be better to "impound" their boot and send them a bill. My impound fee is the same as my rent payment, and I charge by the hour.

34

u/SalaavOnitrex 2d ago

Oh you're so innocent and wholesome. Even if they aren't allowed, it's more common they'll do it anyways and bank on the fact that people not take them to court over it.

→ More replies (4)

5

u/thedankening 2d ago

Takes more money and time than most people have to fight them in court over it. Particularly bad police departments (aka a depressingly large number of them) are also often in bed with the scummier tow companies who pull this shit.

If you've got definitive proof (video evidence and whatnot) that they straight up stole your car then you might have a fighting chance. Otherwise yes you're pretty much fucked and don't expect the cops to help.

→ More replies (5)

74

u/survivorr123_ 2d ago

its funny to me that in USA people sue very easily and usually win, but seems like anyone can just tow any car for no reason and get away with it, while in europe if someone does something to you then you're fucked even if it's serious, but if someone towed your car and damaged it then it's an easy win for you so cars are never towed at all

9

u/hammr25 2d ago

Tow companies need to have a government license to tow so they actually have a license to steal. The government is picky on who they let steal cars.

→ More replies (3)

7

u/amanon101 2d ago

I think it depends on state. In California the cops need to be notified to enter it into the vehicle database, I believe the requisites are if the owner wasn’t contacted (repo/private property tow) or if the cops ordered the tow (crime, involved in wreck etc). It causes issues if no notification is made, for example if it’s not entered people not knowing the tow happened report it stolen, car gets auctioned off by tow company after a while, new buyer is screwed when they try to register it and it’s a massive mess.

5

u/Miserable_Plum_8108 2d ago

They are suppose to. I had a hertz vehicle that they took back ( dealership was covering and renewed the day before...) . They never reported it and they came at 530 am Christmas eve morning. I spent 6 hours with police and an additional 5 days of screaming at people to finally track it down.

Since it was Christmas eve then Christmas day everything was close and it was a giant pain in the ass.

One day woke up to find my wife's classic '80s Cutlass Supreme similarly gone (stolen, not towed) from our condo complex parking lot. Probably chopped up for parts. Not a trace ever found.

Law enforcement is so useless in these cases.

466

u/Trippin_Witty 2d ago

Someone sideswiped me while driving and got away. I got a picture of the truck with a clear picture of the license plate from a witness. Law enforcement never took action.

192

u/-BlueDream- 2d ago

Insurance will probably investigate more than the police would unless the guy that hit you didn't have insurance (which is likely cuz he ran). Insurance companies hate paying our claims and will do anything to get the other guy if they're at fault.

Had a car stolen and the police didn't bother investigating, it was the insurance company's legal team that pulled security footage from the mall and surrounding areas by subpoena, not the cops. Cops didn't do shit.

36

u/CallyThePally 2d ago

It feels funny to me cause it's like they're supposed to be the ones handling law and you'd imagine that includes evidence gathering and stuff like this (or I would imagine at least for my first guess) but we've somehow shifted the responsibility to insurance companies??? This sounds like a weird prediction of the future going wrong. Same idea: "in the future you will not only have everyone work in Walmart, thanks to Walpartments you can now live in the basement beneath the Walcomplex for cheaper than anywhere else!" (More like Amazon for an actual real life thing that may happen but yeah)

19

u/nineinchgod 2d ago

It feels funny to me cause it's like they're supposed to be the ones handling law

This is part of the mythology we're indoctrinated with in this nation. In reality, cops exist to protect the institutions of capital, i.e., the owners of everything.

Years ago my Integra + all my possessions were stolen(homeless). I was drunk which is how my keys were stolen and walked the streets in despair for like an hour until I saw some cops.

I told them it was a red ‘92 Acura Integra, license plate XxxxxX, showed pics on my phone, gave the full name and description of the thief, location/time of theft and more. They basically said whatever, call tomorrow. My car showed up totaled 2 weeks later in the next state over with $600 in tow fees. Come to find out thief was cruising around town for 3 days before leaving the state and it was posted online, parked in his driveway… they never followed up with me.

In what cases aren't they?

They clear about 50% of murders (that includes "solving" a murder with the wrong suspect, they only care about convictions, not justice), the less severe the crime, the lower the number.

They refused to take a report when my car was stolen, they have no fucks to give those on the other side of their blue line.

So your car exists in theory, but not in practice.

pretty much lmfaooo

on a more serious note, i have a 2014 Escape i’ve owned for 4 years now. i’ve genuinely had no issues with it and it was my first (and to this day) only car. despite being FWD it actually does pretty good in the Canadian winters. F-150’s on the other hand, my dad said he’ll never buy one ever again and he wishes he went with GMC or RAM.

This is "mildly infuriating"?

If I woke up and my car wasn't where I'd parked it, I'd be fucking pissed.

I woke up to find my car gone. Tow company towed it saying my tag was not visible. It was handing on the farking mirror where it belonged. The office and the company would not admit they were wrong. They even claimed I somehow put it on after the fact. Not sure how I broke into their 10 foot fenced in impound lot. lol

start with 1) am I current on my car payments? 2) call local PD to see if the car was reported as towed for a private impound or a repo. 3) if not found in 1 or 2 above- tell the police operator that you want to report the car stolen.

4) while waiting for the officer ( mileage will vary as to if they send someone or just take the report over the phone ) but think hard on your activities leading up to this moment of discovery? did you go out and get blinding drunk and catch an Uber home? Can you even find your car keys ? ( yes- these are things the police are gonna ask and even more fun questions like who else has keys to the car? have you ever loaned your car out in exchange for drugs? any exes that still have a copy of the key? is the parking lot being striped and perhaps the management just had your moved to a different part of the complex.

and yes- get the oil leak fixed

I was gonna say how good a j/k it would have been if you just revealed you don’t own one.

Sorry about your predicament
