🇲🇮🇸🇨 Was tipped $1, I live in the UK. This is worth nothing.

Post image

It's worth like 76p and it would cost more to get it exchanged. I'm also never going to the US.

it really is a good idea thou. being from the UK, seeing a framed USD would likely end up with some conversation around the story

Netflix original called "Tips"

102

u/Substantial_Coat208 Aug 31 '24

At the risk of sounding crass, I bet the title of "Just the Tip" gets more clicks.

36

u/onefst250r Aug 31 '24

"Just the Tips" (plural) will be the sequel.

We’re talking about tipping, so kinda the complete opposite. Not sure anybody else tips as much or as often. It’s a pretty crazy bit of culture. Business owners save money on payroll and assholes get a discount.

I once chauffeured the CEO of Ford Europe to Heathrow from Daventry to catch a flight to the US.

I had asked his team to let me know how his day was going and whether they thought he'd need something to eat & drink. Got a thermos of tea ready & a couple of decent sandwiches (I remember i would never have paid what they cost just for me) in the car for him.

Got to the airport with time to spare, he enjoyed his mid-evening snack.

I got a buck as a tip.

362

u/DieHardAmerican95 Aug 31 '24

As we say here in the States- “Fuck that guy”.

167

u/awesomebeau Aug 31 '24

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Personally, I'm absent-minded AF and also forgetful. Like that guy, I also lead a team of people where I work. Sometimes I get so focused on what I'm doing that I don't think about my surroundings.

If you were to tell me "We don't normally do this, but I bought these sandwiches in case you were hungry", I'd give a great tip and/or probably ask how much they cost, so I can do right by you.

If that doesn't happen, I'd probably think it's part of the service I paid for and have a high opinion of your chauffeur company... Or I wouldn't think about it at all.

That being said, the dollar tip is shitty even if there weren't sandwiches.

67

u/Square_Site8663 Aug 31 '24

Ever since MAGA became a thing.

This quote is obsolete if you ask me.

There are plenty of things I can and will attribute to malice over stupidity. Specifically if you’re working in the service industry.

29

u/awesomebeau Aug 31 '24

I'm sure you'd agree that a European CEO flying from the UK didn't tip less due to an influence from American politics.

In the US, the quote may not be true as often anymore, but it certainly explains most of my mistakes in life.

So, which one is it?

3

u/YmamsY Sep 01 '24

When I first visited Europe I bought old currency on ebay before hand and would present it to bartenders as a joke to pay.

I would leave them as a souvenir afterwards and a bartender in Paris even gave a free shot, good times!

153

Hmm... I have a whole stack of German reichmarks from the 1940's but I guess it might not be a good idea to try to pay with them anywhere in Germany...

60

u/p00bix Aug 31 '24

In the off chance you aren't shitposting, Reichsmarks can sell for a pretty decent amount of money. For better or worse, there's always a market for Nazi memorabilia.

28

u/xwcg Aug 31 '24

they are completely worthless, you can buy stacks of them on ebay for a pocket change. It's a nice conversation starter but nothing much else.

Just invest it in a drop shipping influencer programme and double it bro, then double that and keep doing that a few more times and after 19 times it's $1,000,000

Then take that million and invest it in 20-25 rental properties to yield passive income like a true bro, then remortgage those properties and you will have $17-$20 million

Take that $30 million buy a fortune 500 company and you'll be a CEO.

*You will have to leave the UK

31

u/StraightUpJello Aug 31 '24

Becomes a cool little trinket.

76

u/Strain_Pure Aug 31 '24

Less than nothing, since the cost to convert it to pounds/pence would actually leave you out of pocket.

35

u/The_Real_dubbedbass Aug 31 '24

Seriously? My bank here charges a small fee but it’s based on a percentage of whatever you’re trying to convert. So no matter how small the money is you’re never out of pocket getting it converted.

Now whether it’s worth converting is a different thing. But at least with my bank if you go and do it you’ll get back some amount of money and you’ll never convert it at a cost higher than what you’d get back.

So I work in a theme park in Europe. We dont accept dollars or American Express cards. Cue American group of friends. We are the first restaurant thatd open where you can get coffee in the morning. They come in and order 5 coffees. First one tries his card, American Express. Declined. Second guy tries, same story. I ask if one of them has no American Express. One girl said she had cash. She gives dollars. IN EUROPE. I calmly explain we do not accept non European currency. The panic sets in. Apperantly they thought dollars were international. They had no way to pay for anything in and around the park, or for the hotel they stayed at. Best i could do at that moment was direct them to a bank, but without money for a bus or anything that would take a long walk. Please for the love of god, if you go abroad, CHANGE YOUR MONEY AT THE AIRPORT OR A BANK

If it makes you feel better, it’s worth nothing in the US as well.

21

u/gimmeecoffee420 Aug 31 '24

The US has a tipping culture because they underpay their staff. I don't know that much of the US, but I think that even for US standards this is laughable.

4

u/Squirrel_Chucks Aug 31 '24

Yup.

If this was a tip for a small cup of coffee then it might be ok.

I was also once tipped with a.$1 note. I was working in The Netherlands. The customer in all sincerity acted like he was handing me something of true significance . A real American dollar? Hey gee whiz mister thanks! The thing is it’s not 1946 anymore and the Dutch youth aren’t so awestruck with American notes and sticks of bubblegum.

Edited for typos. I couldn’t see properly as my eyes were tearing up at the memory of when I was handed a real American dollar.

u/outdatedelementz Aug 31 '24

You could use it to commit a crime that the US government will never prosecute you for. Burn that sucker.

Well it’s worth about 0.75€, which is nearly nothing, but not literally 0€

Well, if you want to visit the US one day you will have one dollar to spend.

5

u/RiverKawaRio Aug 31 '24

Dude, I love foreign currency. I have a pouch full of coins from all over. I wish my customers would offer to pay a portion with their home currency. Now this person did tip you less than a dollar in exchange

u/TuftOfTheLapwing Aug 31 '24

UK citizen here. I’m not surprised, it’s a hill quite a few Brits are willing to die on. The view that tipping must remain optional in order to make employers pay employees properly is widely and strongly felt. I get that US culture is different, but when people basically help themselves to your money, when you’re on holiday and already paying a lot of money to have a good time, it can grate somewhat.

Happen to me all the time. Working in an near the Guiness factory I. Dublin. Americians come in all the time and try and pay in USD and some will tip in USD thinking they doing us a huge favour. Luckily our boss pools our tips and honours any USD received.

Dollar notes are great for Origami, there is an entire "Genre" of stuff folded from 1$ Bills. You should Look into that

4

u/Mystic_Crewman Aug 31 '24

Frame it. First "dollar" you ever made.

4

u/PDX6Star Sep 01 '24

Roll it up and squirrel it away for the day you need to smell something carefully while very close to the table…

u/KatarnsBeard Aug 31 '24

Yanks are convinced that dollars are accepted all over the world

Illegal to transact in anything other than Australian currency within Australia. An old law to stop mining companies paying wages in scrip only good in the mining company store.

So technically, offering that US$1 tip can get the tourist into criminal difficulties, especially since the motivation of some US tourists would be that the tip is part of the payment for the trip, not a gift. Thankfully Australia isn't that litigious.

Sadly all too common, I used to get asked if we accepted dollars when it came to paying bills. No, we won't accept dollars for your £234 bill.

Not to assume the circumstances, but was it an American that tipped?

If so I’d like to say it was due to force of habit, however… I could see it as an entitled insult, depending on the bill cost. If they tipped $1 in the US, the server would likely blast them on SM because that is insulting. OTOH, the implied entitlement in thinking that $1 is equal to a King’s ransom in the UK and that this is generous, ouch.

For the peanut gallery, there’s no need to tip in the UK, or Europe, because laws that make sure servers are paid decent wages. Sometimes people will tip if the service is very, very good, but it’s not common, is entirely optional and definitely not expected.

they make very good book marks

u/rPoliticsIsASadPlace Aug 31 '24

I disagree. Here you are getting attention because of it. Priceless.

u/Fuzzy_Judgment63 Aug 31 '24

Traveling to England was one of the most awesome experiences of my life. I still to this day carry a 10 pound note in my wallet as a keepsake.

3

u/SchmartestMonkey Aug 31 '24

As an American, I have to say tipping culture is getting awful complicated. It seems to be growing in Europe over the last 20 years but it’s still inconsistent. I do google “tipping in “ whatever country we’re traveling through to make sure I know what’s customary though.

Assuming it wasn’t an FU.. I’d speculate one of the following is possible…

1) they thought dollars were accepted everywhere. Note, I have been to very touristy places like Jamaica & the Bahamas where businesses will take USD. This is perhaps the dumbest possibility but I wouldn’t rule it out.

2) they were out of pounds and figured you probably got enough USD from tourists that you just save them up and exchange it for local currency when it’s worth it.

3) they were out of pounds, thought tipping wasn’t required but couldn’t deal with that as Americans so they left you something, and they probably thought they were going above and beyond.

I should also note.. I do bring US dollars with me in Europe.. not just for the airport, but because I figure if I lose a wallet, I’ve got something that I can convert while I get things straightened out. I may not be able to buy lunch with them in a pinch but I feel better having reserve cash.

u/Green_Telephone_2344 Aug 31 '24

“I got a dollar, I got a dollar, I got a dollar hey, hey, hey, hey“ - buckwheat

3

u/Closerangel Aug 31 '24

If you fold it clever you can make it read Tits of America

3

u/whyarentwethereyet Aug 31 '24

Am i the only one who likes foreign currency? The same people who are complaining are the same people who oppose tipping culture. I'm so confused, what's the problem?

3

u/State_Conscious Aug 31 '24

There’s a 9/10 chance there’s trace amounts of cocaine on that dollar. You’re welcome.

3

u/State_Conscious Aug 31 '24

…and a higher chance that there’s trace amounts of fecal matter on it. Tread lightly

3

u/_Mehdi_B Aug 31 '24

so you got tipped about 76p and made a reddit post about it?

3

u/thebipeds Aug 31 '24

Funny, I the US I worked at a restaurant near an international airport and got tipped pounds and euros all the time.

I think I still have a pile of them in a drawer somewhere.

Your bank should let you deposit it.

3

u/Dbsusn Sep 01 '24

That’s ironic. I live in the US and that is also worth nothing.

3

u/IntelligentBench6880 Sep 01 '24

It's not worth anything in America either

3

u/Uniformed-Whale-6 Sep 01 '24

yeah it’s ass that someone tipped you so little, but on the other hand, it’s kinda fun to collect currencies from around the world. idk if you had any american money prior to this but now you have some!
