While I subscribe to the theory that Aokiji and Akainu came to an agreement, I'm dying at the idea of them both wanting the Sword job SO badly that they fought to the death for it. Imagine Aokiji meeting Akainu again and being like "Hello again, Fleet Admiral LMAO".

I find it impossible for Akainu to want to be the head of SWORD, his justice wouldn't allow him to work with pirates imo, if anything they would fight over whether or not SWORD should be disbanded.

That's true, but they later helped each other when the World Government wanted to execute them.
As seen in their cover story.

u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army May 30 '24
Between the members of the Cipher Pol, sure, there's camaraderie. None to the people of Galley-La with whom they had worked for years though. Stussy kind of paid the Cipher Pol in the same coin, betraying them, but was able to show Kaku some mercy even after the betrayal.

This chapter contextualized the "I can't say which side was right or wrong" stance a bit more, where Vegapunk says that he is confused why Joyboy would leave the weapons around with the intent to use them, if using them floods the world. Leave it to Vegapunk to ask a really good question.
83
u/Wolf308 May 30 '24
Didn't Rayleigh say that the Strawhats should make their own conclusions after their journey and they maybe think differently? So there has to be an open question at the end after they find the One Piece. And the answer to that question involves the ancient weapons. Which revolve around flooding the world. Uranus causes it, Poseidon, in a pact with joyboy, to save non Merfolk with the Noah and a massive battleship in Pluton to attack or defend. So massive that Iceburg and Franky couldn't believe how they build it. There could be giants envolved. The final question should be along the lines of: will you use the ancient weapons after hearing my story?

That story Roger laughed at has got to be harrowing enough that it has put the Roger Pirates in a strict code of silence and Rayleigh drunk as hell upon the information unearthing itself.
What on earth happened at the Void Century? We know what's to come with the apocalypse but there has to be a bigger and harsher truth ahead that gives context to all of this.
→ More replies (15)324
u/MonkeyStealsPeach May 30 '24
It makes you wonder what he could've said, because it seems like he (and the crew) said nothing, but he ultimately sparked the search for the One Piece and a new age of piracy under the guise of trying to find his treasure, which has to be the key to all of this.
263
u/goldenhearted 7D4W May 30 '24
Yeah I think back to Rayleigh's "perhaps you'll have a different take on it" (paraphrased) dialogue with a lot more weight. I think what Joyboy left behind is radical enough that it's something someone has to see for themselves to make a better take on it.
The Roger Pirates saw something, and feel it needed the world to an age of discovery and exploration to find this truth and take it for what it is for themselves than getting it from hearsay.
→ More replies (13)87
u/Grumpchkin May 30 '24

Everyone after Wano: "Yeah, Egghead will be a nice short arc to kickstart the final saga. I hope we will go to Elbaf soon!"
What actually happened:
Vegapunk reveal, Seraphim reveal, 5 Elders full name and DF form reveal, Lucci and Kaku awakened forms, Garp vs Aokiji, Koby secretly being strong af, God Valley and God Knights and one of the saddest backstories in the whole series later we are suddenly here with Vegapunk dropping the VoidCentury onto us after his death.

I think i have a theory on how Vegapunk fooled York: we see Vegapunk talking but we don’t the “device” he is using to film his speech. That is because he is not talking in front of some camera or device: he is making his speech to the Kuma Seraphim. He is making him record his speech using Kuma ability to take memories, and the reason why York is surprised Vegapunk was able to lie to her is because he made the Kuma Seraphim use his memory ability to keep the speech in some place to be shown later (guarded by the giant robot) and then he made the Seraphim take away his memory of the speech and York betrayal so she does not suspect a thing and catch her and the elders surprised

Crocus living inside a whale and Rayleigh coating ships are forms of countermeasures if ever when the world sinks.
There's also a giant beanstalk theory in Elbaf and fan speculates that the next destination after Elbaf is a sky island by climbing to that giant beanstalk to get there.
The most logical way to stay alive when the world sinks is to stay in a sky island. I'm calling it now, Gaban is in a sky island and the strawhats would meet him when they climbed that giant beanstalk.

Okay so elders are gonna shut down the broadcast snail so us readers won't get spoiled anymore lmao
Nice to see Akainu SEETHING
Stussy please live :(
Vegapunk both said too much and still blue balled us with this long ass speech. I guess the biggest things are
- The world is sinking from a man-made cause
- An ancient weapon is being used for the world's flooding and for the sky beams. They (or at least one) requires massive energy from a powerful source such as the mother flame to be activated
- York stole a fragment of the flame for the WG
- Joyboy ensured that the weapons were passed on to future generations
- The war from 800 years ago that ties Imu, Joyboy, and the Nefertari family is still on going. We all know Imu ordered the instant eradication of Lulusia so it's being implied right now Imu is the cause of the flooding (but gradually)
- Lulusia being gone just made it to the public. Also makes VP's recording somewhat recent. As York said, there's something about the timeline and Stella knew all along and made plans behind the scenes
- Roger pirates knowing everything about the void century is also news to everybody
The seriousness of a sinking world, erasure of an entire country, and a secret war is juxtaposed with the Laughtale story being funny, the most powerful crew of all time's inaction, and them downplaying it as a 'thrill' to seek. Great storytelling.

u/Skeleboi846 May 30 '24
First potential look at Lili with the Imu panel?
I think people are missing the point a little with the Rayleigh stuff too - it's likely even if they shared the truth that very few would act on the word of a group of pirates who tell the world they're all going to sink into the ocean. Roger's plan was to compel people to sea with a promise of 'Treasure'. The mystique of the great pirate era was their call to action - and if people knew that this vast treasure they were looking for was effectively a history book they probably wouldnt be interested

Maybe it's just me, but I can't shake a weird feeling about that final page. I get a feeling of lost hope. Like Roger and the others learned a truth so dark and hopeless about the Void century that all they could do was just laugh as a response. Almost like they totally gave up hope in that moment. But they didn't want to take away "the thrill of the hunt" for everyone else in the world, so instead of telling everyone and making them lose hope too, they just remained silent in despair. Rayleigh drinking so heavily and saying "The thrill is theirs to seek now, right roger?" Just solidifies that feeling for me.

u/Kirosh2 Lookout May 30 '24
I think it's a situation of "Damn if you do, damn if you don't."
On one hand you have the WG, on the other you have something Joyboy and/or the Ancient Kingdom wanted to do, or let happen that might cause a change in the world so big that it might just be better to just do nothing instead.

I didn't get that vibe at all. I think all he has is a bit of a disappointment that they weren't at the right place the right time to beat the WG themselves. He is even optimistic and happy for the new generation that will be able to learn all the secrets and have the power to overcome them.

A lot of people already calling it but I think they learned the truth and that Joyboy's return was needed and the only way that was going to happen is if they inspired generations ambitions to rebel against the WG (piracy)

Doesnt feel like that. If Roger was hopeless he wouldn't have started the Great Pirate Era. He knew there was hope but he couldn't be the one to bring the dawn as he was too early. Rayleigh is like that cuz he's drunk as fuck lol.

Same. I mean they could have lost hope partly because they realized that they were 20 years too early and that Roger wouldn't live to see it because of his illness. But I also think that what they found was so overwhelming that they couldn't help but laugh

Also the theory of vp outsmarting everyone and orchestrating the whole thing is looking surprisingly plausible now.

Imu simping over Lily has me thinking this is going to be more about the ideologies of friendship and betrayal. Big Mom emphasized that pirates betray eachother all the time...I feel like this cuts deeper back to the VC. Imu is clearly butt hurt as fuck when talking to Cobra about Lily. Wouldnt be surprized if this is all over Lily choosing Joyboy over Imu romantically. This action of betrayal is what officially labels Joyboy as a Pirate. It's not about sailing or adventure. It's about stealing and plundering from someone.

What if the One piece is the original power source. Joy boy hid it before losing. Stealing it stopped the sinking of the world until a new power source could be found.
The Roger pirates didn’t have access to the ancient weapons because Shirahoshi wasn’t born yet (or old enough to control her powers I kinda forget if she was born) so they couldn’t do anything with the knowledge.
The WG is concerned with revolt and revolution before they can sink the world. That’s why they stop anyone from reading the poneglyphs. But they don’t know what the one piece is and that’s the irony. If they knew they could claim it themselves and win their war. That is why Rogers laughed.

I absolutely love Stussy's character arc of realizing her humanity and I'm especially a sucker for characters who sacrifice their lives in the face of certain death. Amidst all the game changing lore and complete chaos of several top tier characters duking it out, it's impressive that Oda still finds a way to get me to give a shit about a (somewhat) new side character. I can't wait until the Egghead arc is complete and I can binge it in full and appreciate all the story threads that weave together.

Everyone assumes Luffy is even paying attention to the Vegapunk info dump when he's probably just tunnel visioning the strong opponent in front of him and trying to escape. I just realized something! The three ancient weapons are NOT WEAPON! They are only called weapons by the world government to demonize them. Mother Flame was an unlimited energy source that COULD be turned into weapon, got demonized cuz it will give people too much freedom. All the other weapons must have had other usefulness attached to them. That's why JoyBoy want all of them to pass on to next generation.

That body shot of the giant was baller. Not only does it very much resemble the Ancient Giants, like Oars, but that shot of its whole body REALLY gave me pause. I know it looked more fearsome to others but to me, it gave off a sort of “Franky" theme, I could practically hear the music in the background. Looks like the elders are going straight for him.... Could the Iron Giant face them head on?
You know, looking at Franky age 50 from the bad future and the iron giant, you can see the similarities and the resemblance. Hey, is that why Franky in the bad future turned himself into a ship? Cause of the sinking world? Was that foreshadowing by Oda? The Iron Giant was once a being of flesh or partly flesh that went full metal?

If Roger had tried to tell the world the truth they might not have believed him. It'd have been written off as the crazy last words of a dying pirate. Remember, most people hate pirates and Roger was one of the most infamous. Instead, he sent millions of people looking for the truth under the guise of a Treasure Hunt. Now the sea is full of people fighting against the World Government. The more pirates there are, the greater the chances that one of them is Joyboy.

A theory about Joy Boy's stance on making the weapons accessible:
I think the ancient weapons will be seen as a direct parallel to VegaPunk's experience with the Mother Flame.
VP wanted the MF to be an energy source that would bring the world into a new era of prosperity. But it is just a tool, and in the wrong hands it became a weapon.
I think we'll find out that the ancient weapons were developed by a person (or collective) with similar intent as Vegapunk. Perhaps the underlying technology was intended as terraforming tools. Pluton and Uranus as tools to reshape the world, Poseidon as a means to control nature.
Collectively, these tools could be used to balance the planet. Individually, their power is lopsided. Fighting breaks out, tools become locked behind idealistic and selfishly motivated factions. Balance is lost. The new status quo suits those in power so they seek to preserve the imbalance and make it the new standard of balance. So the world is flooded, "forever". It could be unflooded, or even more flooded, but the WG decided that they would attempt to rule in perpetuity and keep things this way.
Joy Boy represents the idealogy that tools can be re-created, and if you blast the world back to the stone age, it will inevitably climb back up to the nuclear age. So it is better to topple the leadership that has failed but preserve access to technology, and attempt to let the next generation make progress, rather than hit a big reset button.
20 Kingdoms and the modern WG represent the idealogy that humanity cannot handle its own potential and will eventually destroy itself, so it is best to try and find a stable point lower than the apex, and try to keep things there.
Both idealogies will struggle with fighting and cycles of progress/regression, and then ultimately the dirty details become the individual stories of tyrants, freedom fighters, "heroes that live long enough to become villains", "good kings that have awful heirs", etc etc.
For hundreds of years the WG has kept the world at a low level technologically and has carefully metered progress, allowing slow growth while vetting each step as "acceptable" insofar as it can improve things without opening more pandora's boxes. All the while they have been juggling political control. Things are not great. The world nobles are a growing cancer in their culture. The unrest that derives from this political model is coming to a head with the revolutionaries representing the blowback. The growth of piracy and underworld operations represents wildcard exposure of everything they seek to suppress. Allowing Vegapunk to surge the world forward is probably very risky to their idealogy, but as long as they control his innovations, it's a tantalizing way to stay ahead of the competition, and thus we have figuratively landed on the WG having a "nuclear option" in response to all of this. But the knot is only getting more tangled, and now what we are seeing is the WG's presumed control of VP blowing up in their faces.

Many have theorized, that the One Piece world is post-apocalyptic. But what if, the apocalypse is yet to come, or slowly happening?
Rayleigh's reaction here felt oddly melancholic. Maybe, just maybe, Roger pirates laughed at the final island, because nothing can be done? They've reached the final island, all the work they did, only to be told "it's already over, nothing to be done". What else could you really do, but to laugh at that point?
That would explain why they didn't tell anyone. Why cause mass panic? And who would believe that anyway? So why not encourage people to see the world and enjoy life, while you can. And perhaps someone could come along, and find a way to prevent the apocalypse. Come to a different conclusion. Maybe them being too early simply ment, that the end wouldn't come yet.
And maybe that's the world goverment's and Imu's goal. Save those, who they deem worth saving. And use the rest, to keep celestial dragon's safe.
I do believe, that the Straw Hats, and Luffy being JoyBoy, can prevent this fate. Luffy could somehow mend the mistake that JoyBoy did, that caused all this.
I don't have any details yet, this is just me spitting out thoughts. But Oda, being a huge fan of vikings, must've taken inspiration of the nordic apocalypse Ragnarök. And Nika being a deity of giants, JoyBoy being the embodiment of Nika, Luffy the reincarnation of JoyBoy, and JoyBoy's action causing all this, it would tie everything together.

If you think about, Vegapunk's speech is the third "One Piece is real" of the series (first Roger, then Whitebeard, and now Vegapunk).
He is saying with all letters that the Pirate King crew know about the true history of the Void Century to the whole world, heating up the dispute for the One Piece. It is an existential crisis now.
Maybe this will have imprevisible consequences, like Marines joining the race too? Akainu was heated up to know all.
