Underrated joke of the chapter is everyone getting a cutesy simple drawing in the Labophase map except Usopp, implying that he drew the map and decided to make himself look cool.

I love how the gorosei don't care that Lucci lost in a fight or failed in a mission just because he did his job in giving a good, concise intel report without needing to be asked a million questions for each line item.
597
u/tryingmydarnest Mar 22 '24
failed in a mission
One can argue that Lucci not seeking permission to fight Luffy, and by extension failed to give Marines advance warning that a Yonko is around so that they could adjust their plan, was what led to this mess.
Surprised that Gorosei didn't have his head for that. Then again, insects be insects.

He really is feeling it. He didn’t seem to be putting as much of a fight in the end and in doing so, allowed himself to be thrown away.
He lost his will after having killed his long time friend Vegapunk, defeated his protege Sentomaru, attacked and tried to kill both his friend Kuma and friend’s daughter Bonney after their countless hardships and learning that their ordeals came about because one his bosses, Saturn, basically gave them their fates.
Bound by his duty, with a heart that can’t take more. He is as Vegapunk said, a “sad man” literally.

Kizaru really did the John Coffey:
„I’m rightly tired of the pain I hear and feel, boss. I’m tired of bein on the road, lonely as a robin in the rain.[…] I’m tired of people bein ugly to each other. It feels like pieces of glass in my head. I’m tired of all the times I’ve wanted to help and couldn’t. I’m tired of bein in the dark. Mostly it’s the pain. There’s too much. If I could end it, I would. But I can’t.“

Lucci was quite interesting this chapter. He showed how tough he was by surviving an intended finishing blow, and then showed his first hint of mercy in wanting kaku to be spared. He’s not all bad…..just 98% bad
Warcurys conquerors haki roar was really impressive too, it managed to stagger luffy a bit!

Luffy must've been moving damn fast to:
- Grab a tree

- Paint it black
- Grab a helmet
- And then proceed to hit a home run on two Gorosei.... after Saturn launched his projectiles.
Luffy faster than Kizaru confirmed.

I know the Lucci slander will be strong with the agenda this week.
But I actually got to say I really enjoyed this character development for Rob.
Not only did he show just how efficient of an agent he truly is. But his terror at most likely seeing an elder transformed for the first time. The look in his eyes I never would have imagined he would have.
And then for him to make mention of kaku and ensuring his safety. He even made sure to mention the cipher pool agents who are in held hostage as well.
Lucci maybe one of the most morally bankrupt characters in the series.
But he's still human

First the big elephant now the giant robot. I'm thinking Joyboy's ally's betrayed him in the past and got screwed over hence why they are remorseful over it. Luffy's biggest success will be in having allies that are completely loyal to him.
Also think there might be a parallel between Lucci asking Mars to spare Kaku and the giant robot apologising to Joyboy. Maybe the robot and/or elephant were in a similar to position to Lucci 800 years ago.

I absolutely loved the scene with Rob Lucci and Mars. Here he is in the direct presence of the highest publicly known authority of the World Government and Lucci gives him a perfectly detailed report of everything that Mars would want to know.
All Lucci asks in exchange is for Mars to save his partner Kaku and Mars’ response to that one request he could easily do is essentially “don’t get your hopes up, you’re all pathetic insects to me”.
Despite dedicating his life to the World Government and being one of their best agents, the Five Elders only think of him as an expendable insect.

Theory: Joy Boy lost because his crew was not strong enough to support him vs Imu. Luffy’s key to success will be his crew.
If you think about it, Imu, and maybe even the elders, have already beaten Joy Boy and the Nika fruit. It makes no sense that Luffy would win just because he has awaken his fruit. The bad guys know how to beat the fruit (and maybe that’s why they can’t be hurt).
We are meeting JoyBoy’s former crew. Zunesha and the robot are in penance because they couldn’t support him.
This also fits with the gigantic things (hat, Zunesha, robot).

Oda is really part of the One Piece internet community, ain't he...no way he made up that "painting baseball bat with Haki" outta nowhere after years of "Mihawk painted his sword" shitposting🤣

Jinbe in the Hawaiian shirt is a 10/10 outfit. Also, it is intriguing that everyone somehow acquainted with joyboy keeps apologizing to him. Maybe he was betrayed by them somehow.

I'm afraid of the theories I'll read during 3rd week of pause. Scary thoughts.

u/VanGrants Mar 23 '24
Between Zunesha being guilty of a crime and the giant robot apologizing, my working theory is 800 years ago they were Joyboy's allies who didn't show up when he needed them and as a result Joyboy died. They were his crewmates or allies and either abandoned him or for some reason were unable to fight by his side.

Anyone else noticed that The bigger-sized the Race, the more they knew about Nika ?
- Dwarves not a mention.
- Human some rumors in prisons.
- Minks barely a mention.
- Fishmen knew about Joyboy.
- Kaido (Race?) Knew about Joyboy prophecy.
- Buccaneers knew Nika name and his rhythm.
Giants knows how he looked like ?
( Zunisha/Iron Giant/Seakings aside )
I wonder if he was from the giants / oars race.

What a packed chapter!! There’s oh so many things to talk about this chapter:
1) Having Kuma, Bonney, and Vegapunk in a colour cover is so nice. We basically never get side characters be in a random colour spread hanging out with the Straw Hats, so this is pretty nice. I wouldn’t read too much into it though, I strongly doubt Stella or Kuma would join the Straw Hats (at best Kuma joins the Grand Fleet if he recovers, but he’s more likely to return to the Revolutionaries I think).
2) So Lucci wasn’t instantly KO-ed, though it looks like it’s pretty close. Jinbe apologizing to Lucci is peak Jinbe and I love it! Also seeing Lucci care about Kaku is weirdly humanising for him.
3) Interaction between Luffy and the Giants are lovely! So happy they are now reunited! The retreat signal and the subsequent Haki roar was pretty cool (and funny) too! Seems like the Sun’s Shield the chapter is referring to is Dorry and Brogy.
4) I’m starting to feel like maybe the Goroseis are actually glass cannons that have a no-death cheat. Their attacks seem so deadly: one-shotting pacifistas, explosive poisons, the haki roar, and destroying the shields in the upper levels so easily. On the other hand, it seems like every other attack is making a great connection and they are staggered by it. The difference is, they’re just either not dying or just instantly recovering all their health. Their hax is looking pretty good.
5) But maybe not quite as insane as Luffy’s maybe-hax. If I’m remembering it correctly, this will be the second time (the first being Luffy making a pair of goggles with his hair while he used one of the rails in Egghead as an irish whip during his one-sided battle against Lucci) Luffy is displaying abilities that seem very outside his rubber abilities. The hair-into-goggles thing is such a small insignificant detail that you can easily wave it off as “rule of cool”, but this one is significantly harder to justify as it takes up almost a full page and has multiple panels dedicated to it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the baseball thing makes people start to speculate toon force again. I myself am still not sure and need to see more.
6) Wonder what’s up with Kizaru? Will he really make a face turn? I’m one of those who wanted it (but never saw it as being possible or realistic, just a ”that’d be an interesting twist” thing), but I’m still doubting it.
7) THE MECHA IS MOVING !

Kizaru gets a lot of hate in this arc because us the viewer are seeing this from a civilian standpoint, he is a soldier & yes he’s an Admiral but that’s a soldier with more freedom. He’s been following orders the majority of his life, we don’t know his entire perspective but we do know that his sense of justice has led him to dedicate the majority of his life to the Marines. It makes sense that a man in the military might have to do something that could break their heart at some point, who knows what Kizaru believes he’s protecting.
To quote Game of Thrones “ We're all human. Oh, we all do our duty when there's no cost to it. Honor comes easy then. Yet sooner or later in every man's life there comes a day when it's not easy. A day when he must choose.”
So in a strange way there’s a respect in that as well, as far as defecting we have that in Aokiji so far. All the Admirals are so different from each other I find it incredibly interesting

Ya know… out of all of the crazy shit going on, I can’t believe that the most interesting thing I got out of this chapter was Lucci, the biggest bastard in the world, wanting to save Kaku and looking distraught at the idea of him dying. That was VERY unexpected

Lucci asking for kaku to be spared is probably the most humanity we’ll see from that sociopath. Holy fuck the giants are such power houses no wonder the government fears them, Mr.3 top 10 in the verse?

Jimbe, showing No Mercy!
Then picking up the 2nd strongest in the crew like a lost puppy.
He is so good at following Nami's orders, scared of Nami's unknown haki, possibly.
Funny:
Zoro is like a kid, complaining to his Dad, that he still wants to play.
Now Jimbei holding Zoro like a kid, not even letting him run on his own

Oh my god. The energy matching between Luffy, Dorry and Brogy is amazing. This reminds me of early one piece I fell in love with.
Luffy pulling out paint from no where and batting the poison back - what do the toon force deniers have to say about that? 😂😂

I think the ancient giant robot is about to sacrifice himself for this battle on behalf of the Strawhats, and perhaps he made a pact with Joyboy to live on until their original goal was finished, 800 years ago. It is the only way the Strawhats escape.

Maybe Cp0 knows some top secret stuff of the government just like how those top agent in Hollywood movies does.

First Joy Boy apologizes to Poseidon, then Zunesha is forced to roam the seas because he committed a crime, and now the giant robot is apologizing to Joy Boy. There is a lot of apologizing and atoning revolving around the Void Century
