Kizaru: just stand there letting Apoo land a hit

Also Kizaru: just looks at Marco as he’s about to reach Ace’s execution platform

Also Kizaru: just looks at Franky taking a shot at Saturn.

Man’s the definition of “hang on, i wanna see this before i do anything”

i think that's just his whole character, he acts a bit slow for someone who can move really fast

219

I mean it makes sense, if you can react at the literally fastest possible speed you can wait until the last possible moment

Buccaneers were once people with a special trait beyond their strong bodies : a second heart.

That's how Kuma survived his self destruct mecanism and how Blackbeard can have two devil fruits at the same time.

86

u/jackthe-stripper Jan 18 '24

I think if kuma had a second heart, Vegapunk would already know it, right? He’s basically dissected and built his entire body at this point.

Did we ever see Kuma sleep? Or maybe this ability manifests differently on each individual.

333

u/tryingmydarnest Jan 18 '24

We did. The elders of Sorbet Kingdom specifically warned him to put Bonney in a sturdy cage lest he accidentally crushed her in his sleep. There was a panel of Kuma snoring while resting his arm over the cage.

Man, it's a common pattern that most of the Gorosei's decisions so far have had a way of biting them back in the ass later

and this one's no different

they came here with 3 goals: York, Punk Records, and the lab for making the Mother Flame

Saturn basically lost his shit, forgot why he came there to begin with, and chose the destructive option to begin a Buster Call.

I think the Gorosei's true defining character trait is their lust for destruction. A good warning for which world leaders we should totally avoid in the real world.

704

u/Arashi_39 Jan 18 '24 edited Jan 18 '24

…defining trait is their lust for destruction.

In this instance, I think it’s also pride. The moment an ex-slave laid his hand on Saturn, his pride was wounded and all logics and plans were thrown out of the window.

359

u/revisioncloud Jan 18 '24

Love how he's calling the island infested

I love how Goroseis are actually good villains

It's just that our protagonists keep beating the odds

104

u/jollyjam1 Jan 18 '24

I completely agree with you. A lot of the villains in the series have had sad backgrounds that leaves us with a different opinion of them. The Gorosei are just straight up evil, and I don't think they will end up with any redeemable qualities. Whatever Oda ends up cooking up that pulls everything together where it all makes sense, I think it'll be pretty clear who is truly evil and who isn't.

95

u/5thKablamo Void Month Survivor Jan 18 '24

Yeah, how often does he even get punched like that? They got Fire Fisted at the Reverie once and this (I shall name it) Ursus Rage a few weeks later. Their actions as Gorosei shortly afterward were impulsive and destructive and as irrational as you'd expect from someone who hasn't eaten humble pie in centuries.

I’m so glad Oda has been giving his double-spreads more space to breathe ever since the final saga began. These epic moments need this kind of panel space.

354

u/geekriszx2 Thriller Bark Victim's Association Jan 18 '24

That first pages were designed just for giving us that double-spread punch, massive love for that choice

109

u/guitarburst05 Jan 18 '24

I don't think much about composition on these kinds of things, but now that you mention it that's pretty cool. Tossing in a few small flashbacks in order to line up the paging properly to allow for the full spread is cool.

We all read digitally, so its not necessarily something we have to think about much, but I like seeing those decisions.

He’s definitely wavering on what to do, the darker glasses makes me believe he’s either crying or fucking pissed. With franky he should have had no problems beating the shit out of him or wounding him pretty bad, but it felt more like he was letting him get away since franky actually landed a direct hit on Saturn.

213

Franky put a hole in Saturn ;) Not sure why people are not talking about that, he litterally shot him with a laser.

186

u/hiddenpoint Jan 18 '24

Because he did it after the dude regenerated an entire limb in a single panel so unfortunately most single hits are less exciting now until we learn more about how Saturn's powers work and find out if theres any cost to him at all to be doing that.

Shot a laser at an Elder Star

I cant remember what he did to Kaido

But my word he is earning every berry of that bounty.

Meanwhile, Chopper, Robin, Jimbei, Nami, Usopp, Brook and Luffy are not seen this chapter

(Zoro still fighting cat man and missed everything)

It's insane how much story can still be told even with 75% of your main characters MIA, praise Oda

220

u/Android_Taco Jan 18 '24

He didn't really do anything to Kaido, but he did beat a member of the flying six with no Haki, so that's something.

117

u/dragunityag Jan 18 '24

Man, the lack of Haki in the crew is so weird.

So many officers in BM & Kaido's crew are able to use Haki. I'd imagine pretty much everyone in Shanks is able too as well as at least all the captains in Blackbeards fleet.

Meanwhile only 4 people in the SH can use armament haki and those 4 including ussop can use observation

105

u/KollectiveM Jan 18 '24

It’s not. It’s because the fan base puts too much on Haki when it’s always been Haki - Science - Devil fruits as ‘power systems’. Not everyone needs it, Franky is at the apex of science in OP he’s using his power as a human in a different way. Robin destroyed Black Maria with an overpowered application of her fruit. Queen outright stated that he could simply crush armament masters without even using it himself, etc etc etc

That Punch is a contender for panel of the year, so satisfying.

It seems obvious Luffy is about to return and do something, what exactly im not sure. I dont think hes taking on Saturn and Kizaru alone though, maybe its finally time for Sanji to step in and help out. Maybe he briefly goes toe-to-toe with Kizaru while Luffy absolutely ruins Saturn

That all being said, I'm still convinced Kizaru was the one who gave Luffy all that food and that he's going to somehow assist the SH in escaping Egghead, possibly by being purposefully negligent and allowing them to escape

Next chapter or propably later when the ships start firing their canons Luffy will turn the island into rubber and makes it all bounce back destroying the fleet.

After that They will escape.

The Egghead Incident will be that for the first time in history a buster call was defeated/stopped.

u/goody153 Jan 18 '24

That's definitely within the realm of one piece lol

I was sure Kizaru was the one who gave Luffy food but seeing how he acted this chapter, I’m doubting that now. So who did it? And where is Luffy now?

53

u/AgeOk2348 Jan 18 '24

it could still be him. he had orders to kill, all he did was push people away from saturn

222

u/Putzlumpen33 Jan 18 '24

Well it sure seems weird that he was very conflicted but now is fully back on board. Maybe it's an act and he's waiting for the right moment to defect. But maybe he's just gonna do what "needs to be done" anyway, even if he doesn't want to. At least the "shouldve brought glasses with a darker shade" line seems to imply that

183

u/Nachttalk Jan 18 '24

I'm gonna say it still was him. I'm sure the reason he did it was to save Bonney (without opposing Saturn directly), I suppose killing a child is one bridge too far for him.

But now that Kuma appeared and got rid of that problem, he can now go back to what he was doing before

THE FRANKY AGENDA IS REAL

SUUUUUUUUUUUPER

49

u/satanisreallml Jan 18 '24

At this point, I just hope that the unprecedented incident is the death of Saturn.

Kuma's arc is basically closed with that punch and for some reason it made everyone able to move again, so hopefully the can escape or they get saturn to be deleted by the buster call.

Also, that punch was as satisfying as charlos' and it had been a while since such a despicable character got a well deserved hit.

Saturn calls the Buster call:

Strawhats: "Just another day at the office".

Robin about to survive her 3rd buster call.

What a chapter.

50

u/VenMissa- Jan 18 '24

I audibly shouted when I saw that Haki-infused punch connect with Saturn’s face. And then he picks up and holds Bonney. Like… just keep hitting me right in the fucking feels Oda.

47

u/Lightecojak Jan 19 '24

Here’s my crackpot theory.

What if the event that shakes the world is that the Strawhats don’t just escape the Buster Call, they actually DEFEAT the Buster Call by destroying all of the Warships? Maybe the Grand Fleet gets involved and this is the major event they were involved with?

The Ultimate showing of the World Government’s wrath being defeated could qualify as what the Egghead incident was about and boosts the morale of everyone that is fighting against the World Government.

Also it makes sense now, that Kuma suddenly started to move while on RA Island. At that very moment Saturn activated the self destruction button, which actually disabled everything inside Kuma, with only his soul being left as a motivator to rescue Bonney.

That cover story is unbelievably cute. Same with Bonney going back to her real age to hug her daddy and tell him no one is kinder. Right in the feels. Hit harder than Kuma's punch, i miss Charloss/Bellamy punch days, art is too blurry and cluttered these days, lacks the minimalism of earlier OP.

Holy shit the line work/shading no Kuma looked amazing and that punch felt so satisfying. This chapter's art really fit Kuma and showed his rough state. It was also nice to see that Franky and Sanji are back in action although I'm confused about Luffy's whereabouts. He was close to the action in the last chapter but what could be doing at the moment that doesnt involve Saturn?

Good chapter, left me with some questions:

-What's the other special characteristic of the Bucanneers? The power of love?

-Sanji and Franky could move after the hit to Saturn connected, but why? Was it Conqueror's Haki? Did he need to actively concentrate on using it and the damage of the hit weakened it?

-Is Kizaru truly sad to be doing this or he's 100% on duty? Will we see his full flashback?

-Where did Luffy go to instead of fighting Saturn directly? Luffy doesn't seem to me the kind of person who would do strategic retreats, specially if his friends are on the frontline
