Ok, no one is actually answering the question, does an American have to pay an Italian speeding ticket from a year ago? What's the worst that could happen? It seems like an interesting question.

3.7k

u/leesfer 2d ago

I have experience in this!

I got speeding tickets from camera lights in France, which I chose to ignore, because why not? What could happen?

I ended up going back to Europe 5 years later and they still remember and I am permanently banned from renting cars all around Europe (yes, outside of France, too.)

The other commenters seem to think they'll stop you at the airport but they wont.

The only power known to force Apple to be consumer friendly.

493

u/its_an_armoire 2d ago

As an American, I always knew European consumer protections were stronger, but it didn't hit me until I saw Apple bend a knee and move to USB-C. I was in awe.

Decades of corporate lobbying has watered down our expectation of getting enforcement and compliance on this side of the pond.

448

u/grathad 2d ago

What you call lobbying is actually legalized corruption.

So many seem really proud of how corruptible they are.

Comparative to the EU's current laws, American privacy and consumer protection are effectively nil.

New FTC is doing a bunch of amazing things though.

We outlawed non-compete agreements which is more progressive than EU. We just cracked down on ISP junk fees and introduced a "Nutrition Label" for TV/Internet/Phone plans that looks amazing.

It always baffled me how Apple dominates the US market despite their shitty anti-consumer practices. It's even more puzzling how it somehow managed to brainwash a portion of your population into bullying the people who do not have iPhones.

The slowness is actually an intentional feature. Elect trump over Harris and he'll immediately fuck up the country for four years.
Orban and his party Fidesz fucked up Hungary. Poland got started on it too with their previous administration.

But a couple bad elections in the EU isn't gonna ruin everything because it just takes a long time to dismantle all the structures it's built on. Of course there's problems with glacial bureaucracy, but as a safety feature it's important.

I rented a car in France and drove to Amsterdam about 5 years ago. Got a speeding ticket from Netherlands in the mail about 6 months after my trip and never paid it. I have since rented cars in France and Italy for the past 3 years without any problems

143

u/leesfer 2d ago

Seems like some countries care less than others, probably also depends on how many tickets you get... I had 5 outstanding.

128

u/bob1689321 2d ago edited 2d ago

You do know those speed limit signs are in KM/H and not MPH right? ;)

Edit: I'm just making a fun joke at the idea of an American getting 5 speeding tickets because they misunderstood some signs. Stop taking this so seriously lmao

34

u/leesfer 2d ago

Ha, France just has a lot of fuckery with speed limit changes and speed cameras on the Autoroutes

i guess every experience is different and things change but i had a travel partner not allowed to leave the airport (technically enter the country) until they paid their ticket. this was early-mid 2000s in the netherlands

6

u/kelldricked 2d ago

Fyi: europe is becoming more strict on shit like this. Especially after brexit we have become more active in sharing information and helping eachother out.

I know that if you have open fines in the netherlands that you cant enter the netherland until you pay them. They will take you apart and give you a choice: pay there or book a flight back.

If you don't want to return to Italy, not much from what I've heard, they call you a few times and you ignore them and then you just don't enter that country again

314

u/ScotiaTailwagger 2d ago

Pretty much this. You're not allowed to re-enter the country because you have outstanding fines committed in that country.

If you have no intention on going back to Italy, ever, then don't pay it.

Personally I would because I'm a soft tender bean and also never know if I would want to go back.

39

u/random_sociopath 2d ago

Personally Italy is awesome and I’d love to go back, but I’m not everyone.

7

u/lawpickle 2d ago

Italy was pretty cool, but I have no intention of returning. Not that I didn't think it was amazing (spent 2 weeks there), but with my limited time, I'd rather have new experiences, especially considering I don't have any family or roots there.

Although, I guess I would definitely go to Scotland, again, so maybe I just didn't love Italy as much! :)

As an American traveler here: In this case it is Italy and as members of the European Union they can carry over to multiple other countries. Odds are they won't bar you from entering the country completely or come for you in America (it is just a ticket). When it comes to something like getting a rental car you may denied until you clear that up or other small things may happen.

9

u/JudgeGusBus 2d ago

This has me wondering about my somewhat similar situation.

I studied in France when I was in college, and so had a French bank account. I knew the date I was leaving so I just ran that account down to a few euros, and they say before I left went to tell them I would be closing the account. Except, they told me there were all kinds of fees to close an account, something like €250. They weren’t overdrafts or anything, but administrative fees. So I told them I would come back with the money, and instead I just flew home the next day. Haven’t been back to the EU since. Never heard a peep. I wonder if I flew back if there would be some sort of collection case against me.

12

u/ShiftBMDub 1d ago

You probably still have the bank account.

11

u/sandybuttcheekss 2d ago

I got one in France and was mailed one like 2 months later. I paid it, because I just know that I'll end up in France again sometime and they'll arrest me for not paying my ticket for idk how many years the second I walk through customs.

5

u/GaiusPrimus 2d ago

I got a parking ticket in Italy for 50 euros. I didn't pay, because of the same thing as people are saying. 2 years later, between fines, court fees and interest I owed 400 euro and I couldn't rent a car anywhere.

15

u/Mr_Right_Now__ 2d ago

It gets bought by American collection companies and hits your credit score

11

u/Material_Election685 2d ago

Do you have evidence that this actually happens to a reasonable extent?

From what I can tell, American credit scores basically ignore foreign debts. And if they try to bring it to court, American judges aren't very particular about enforcing default judgements in other countries made in absentia.

9

u/Neuchacho 2d ago edited 2d ago

This doesn't happen anywhere. A ticket isn't a debt. It's a fine. All the collection agency would be doing is paying your fine and them choosing to pay your fine doesn't mean you owe them anything.

Deservedly so, but yeah, I still don’t understand how he “ratio’d” him by being just as embarrassing

22

u/Mikey_RobertoAPWP 1d ago

getting ratio'd doesn't have anything to do with the quality of what is said, all it means is that he got more likes/retweets on his response than the original tweet that he replied to. So, even though he is probably just as embarrassing as Andrew Tate he "ratio'd" him because of the large ratio between their two like counts. That's all.

(for the record i think it's a kinda dumb term, but)

6

u/YouStupidAssholeFuck 2d ago

I know he's also doing the Miss Peaches stuff for clout but I can't help but find that little doggie endearing. She's living a good life regardless of how much Portnoy is actually around taking care of her. I only wish he'd adopt more. Say what you will about anyone but if they adopt shelter dogs they get at least one point in my book.

Also I can't stand the food waste on One Bite. He gets the pizza, takes a piece and eats it over the entire rest of the pizza. Then after he finishes three or four bites he tosses that piece on top of the pizza and usually throws the whole thing away. Even if he doesn't, the rest of his crew can't even eat that pizza because his gross saliva is all over it. That's just me, though.

the head clown in charge himself dave portnoy is prob the worst. he's a huge spoiled crybaby douchebag who tries to appear as an everyman in his stupid pizza reviews, but you can tell he probably has a butler who all but wipes his ass for him. also, (OF COURSE) the guy has sexual misconduct allegations against him... in general it just seems like part of the company culture to be right wing, okay with bigotry and make sure you dont film when everyone is drunk at the company party/afterparty because theyre constantly joking about whos gonna get cancelled aka they know what they are saying without cameras rolling is bad

i actually enjoy WontonDon's content all that being said. he keeps his opinions and bias out of his vids as much as he can, and when his friends (the red headed dude, pmt and the shorter black haired dude) are with him its really funny as long as they stay off the typical "one joke" kinda shit. they play off each other really well imo

It means that the reply got significantly more engagement than the initial post, called a ratio because the likes of the original tweet are a fraction of the likes the response got.

187

u/godownvoteurself 2d ago

It’s the Twitter equivalent of getting downvoted and someone who replies to you gets upvoted

22

u/PlatonicTroglodyte 2d ago

I’ve been on this site for a long time and I don’t recall the last time I saw someone genuinely care about their karma. Disregarding the generic “bring on the downvotes” or “why am I being downvoted” etc., which is really more about a specific comment, I can’t think of a time when anyone has ever cared about their actual karma lol. I’m sure people do, but it’s not really part of mainstream redditing the way it wss back in like 2012 or so.

60

u/godownvoteurself 2d ago

I guess for me its not necessarily about the internet points (though my username might suggest I feel differently lol), its more like, the frustration I feel when I made a good point and not only is no one on my side, they’re actively cheering someone whose reply wouldn’t even exist had it not been for me in the first place. Depends on my mood whether it really bothers me or not. There’s times where I’m livid and times where I just giggle about it.

13

u/Loko8765 2d ago

It’s when I make an important point and somebody replies just rephrasing what I wrote and gets double the upvotes
 yeah, well, it happens.

u/radiosped 2d ago

There is no way to discuss getting downvoted without causing more downvotes. The moment someone accuses someone of whining about downvotes it's over, there is literally no way for the downvoted person to convince people they weren't whining or complaining.

7

u/SenoraRaton 2d ago

I just clarify and stick to my point. I naively assume people just don't understand my position hence the downvotes, because a lot of times people just simply won't engage with a thing at all, and knee jerk react to it and move on.
The REAL fun ones are the ones that turn around. I have had posts where my first post was downvote bombed, and everything underneath of it where I explain my position is upvoted. shrug

Cute coming from someone with under 300k đŸ€Ł

4

u/vinthedreamer 2d ago

Pfff, imagine saying that as someone with only 560,000 karma đŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

u/helpmycompbroke 2d ago

Does the amount of karma matter or is it the average karma per comment?

If you commented 300k times, you'd have 300k karma assuming no votes, right? But that's objectively worse than 30k karma, but only 100 comments because that would mean people are actually upvoting you.

None of these people have shame. It’s fake internet points, but they’re convinced it adds value.

I just gave you a fake internet point, enjoy your false value.

So as I understand it ye have the folks that use Ratio'd don't actually care, but the subject of the ratio actually does, so it kinda mocks them. Then on other those folk that do care. Overall is sad that folks give a shite but at least 1 group don't care & just use it to dunk on those they assume do.
...
I suppose would make it sad if both don't care as well.

Oh my gosh. You’ve just reminded me that I never watched the final season of The Happy Place The Good Place (it wasn’t out yet when I watched the show, and I forgot about it until just now!)

It’s been long enough that I think I am just going to restart the show from episode one. But I’m excited
I forgot all about this show and how good it was! Thank you :)

Basically, it's an indicator that the tweet is both controversial and unpopular. If you make your living on social media, that's important to know. If you don't, then it really doesn't matter.

→ More replies (6)

5

u/Edg4rAllanBro 2d ago

It might also refer to the "ratio" on the post itself, not just between a post and its (specific) replies. For example, if a post got a low reply to likes ratio, maybe like one or two replies to a hundred likes, you can assume it's an uncontroversial post. If your post has maybe 50 replies to a hundred likes, it's probably a pretty controversial post. If it's more replies than likes then it's either an engagement bait post or they're beating your ass in the replies.

It's when a reply has more likes, comments, and/or retweets than the original post. It's a potent insult, as it's essentially saying "More people came to your post just to like my comment, than came to your post naturally."

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Newtonberger 2d ago

In the context of Twitter it usually means a reply or response to another tweet gets more likes than the tweet it is replying to.

7

u/LucidMoments 2d ago

I am glad you asked so I didn't have to.

Basically, when a thread gets hundreds of comments, but zero upvotes.

3

u/icecubepal 2d ago

If you post a topic on Reddit and the topic has more comments than likes. Similarly, if you post something on Twitter and it has more comments than likes or whatever Twitter uses. It typically means people greatly disagree with the original post.

3

u/Intergalacticdespot 2d ago

I think it tends to mean that it got more comments/re-tweets than likes? Which usually means people made fun of you rather than agreed with you. As I understand it. I'm old too and not enough of a musk fanboy to use that site any more. So I could be wrong.

3

u/imsowhiteandnerdy 2d ago

Thanks for asking this BTW, I kinda wonder the same thing every time I hear about twitter ratios.

Portnoy is the saddest "food reviewer" I've ever seen and I'm mad people take him seriously. All you need to do is be nice to him and stand over his shoulder while he does his review and he'll praise you to the moon cause he's too much of a chickenshit to be awkward. But if you don't suck his balls he'll also bash you're place to high he'll. He's got the backbone of a cooked noodle.

Dave Portnoy is a performative dickbag. He thinks by dressing like a hobo half the time and being super casual that it makes him relatable. Meanwhile he’s tweeting that Kamala Harris being the candidate is a coup to steal the election while buying himself a 42 million $$ waterfront property.

This is the most "internet fight" of all the internet fights I ever witnessed. A guy who paid for a blue check mark on twitter had his proudest moments by having more likes than a toxic internet celebrity only popular with incels and is now trying to do the same against a website who sustain itself thanks to clickbait articles and ragebait tweets.

Every one who participated in that fight should know that they actively made humanity a little worse.

30

u/OhioUBobcats 2d ago

Yeah there are no winners here

11

u/ctaps148 2d ago

I think it's fair to say that if you're someone who thinks "getting ratio'd" is significant, you are tragically addicted to social media and should re-evaluate your life choices.

Barstool: posts standard click bait trash that isn't even worth the effort of thinking about

This dweeb: "I'm going to ratio you đŸ€“" and spreads the article around

Reddit: thinks the whole thing is hilarious (?) and also spreads the article

A lot of energy for a site that people allegedly hate

His responses:

  • "Look at me, I'm strong!"
  • "My reply has more likes than Andrew Tate's! I'll do the same to you!"

How any of this even made it to a reddit post that was upvoted enough to make it r/all is insane. "I'm about to ratio you" is Murdered by Words?? Wtf is happening?

It wasn’t. People just hate Tate. As someone who used to fight and is extremely jacked now. Being big doesn’t make you a good fighter. If the guy actually fought Tate. I hate to admit but Tate would like kick the shit out of this guy.

Media company who covers sports and internet trends shares a story about an internet trend and subject of said trend goes off on them for talking about. Murder by words or sniffing his own farts
